Surety Underwriter & Bond Specialist | $800 One-Time Remote
Overview
This role pays a flat $800 for a defined remote project with Mercor, an AI talent platform, and involves helping an AI lab train frontier models on surety and bonding reasoning. You will design realistic bid, performance, and payment bond scenarios, evaluate model outputs against market standards, and write reference responses at experienced-surety-professional quality. The work is task-based, runs through the Mercor platform, and requires 20+ hours per week starting right away.
What You'll Do7
- 1Create realistic underwriting and claim scenarios across bid, performance, and payment bonds, plus commercial and court bonds, to test model reasoning.
- 2Produce work products such as capacity recommendations, credit analyses, bond approvals and declinations, obligee form reviews, indemnity requirements, and claim-resolution strategies.
- 3Write 'golden' reference responses that meet experienced surety professional quality.
- 4Grade AI-generated answers against structured rubrics covering credit judgment, capacity reasoning, contract and bond-form accuracy, and default-resolution realism.
- 5Flag common errors like misread financial statements, overstated capacity, confusion between surety and insurance obligations, mishandled obligee requirements, and unrealistic default or recovery strategies.
- 6Give written feedback that the research team uses to improve model behavior.
- 7Join onboarding office hours and calibration sessions to align with project standards.
Requirements11
- 1Two or more years of professional experience in surety underwriting, bond production, surety claims, or contract-surety credit analysis.
- 2Hands-on work with at least one bond category, such as contract surety, commercial surety, court and fiduciary bonds, license and permit bonds, or subdivision bonds.
- 3Ability to read contractor financial statements and work-in-progress schedules and translate them into capacity and credit conclusions.
- 4Clear understanding of the three-party surety relationship and how indemnity, collateral, and subrogation differ from insurance loss payment.
- 5Strong written reasoning, commercial and credit judgment, and close attention to detail.
- 6Ability to distinguish surety credit decisions from property-casualty risk underwriting and ordinary claim adjudication.
- 7Preferred: AFSB, CPCU, ARM, CPA, or a comparable designation.
- 8Preferred: both underwriting and surety-claims experience.
- 9Preferred: experience with AIA and other standard bond forms or public-works statutory bond requirements.
- 10Preferred: contractor default resolution experience such as takeover, tender, financing, or completion agreements.
- 11Preferred: SBA bond guarantee, funds control, or small and emerging contractor program experience.
Who Should Apply
The ideal candidate is a working surety professional with at least two years in contract or commercial surety who can translate a contractor's financial statements and work-in-progress schedules into capacity and credit conclusions. This role is less suitable for property-casualty underwriters without surety exposure, because the work demands a firm grasp of three-party bond obligations rather than insurance loss payment. Candidates who answer with hazard-underwriting logic, overlook obligee requirements, or have no direct experience with one of the listed bond categories tend to score low on fit. The strongest applications show how the candidate set capacity and indemnity terms in a real default scenario.
Salary Insight
The total pay is a one-time $800 for the entire engagement, not an hourly salary. That flat fee fits a short, focused contract assignment for an experienced surety professional, but confirms the project is task-based rather than a full-time employment role.
