Multiline P&C Underwriter | $800 One-Time Remote
Overview
Mercor is staffing a task-based remote project for a leading AI lab, and the work centers on P&C underwriting. You will design realistic risk-selection scenarios, write gold-standard underwriting assessments, and grade AI-generated responses against structured rubrics. The role runs for a defined scope, requires at least 20 hours per week (ideally 40+), and pays a flat $800 one-time fee. Applications close on a rolling basis and the project starts immediately. Your output feeds directly into insurance reasoning training for frontier models.
What You'll Do7
- 1Build realistic underwriting cases that cover new business, renewals, exposure analysis, loss history, inspections, classification, pricing, limits, deductibles, exclusions, and referral pathways.
- 2Produce underwriting work products such as assessments, quote rationales, information requests, declination explanations, renewal strategies, and risk-improvement conditions.
- 3Write gold-standard reference answers that match the quality of an experienced underwriter.
- 4Score model outputs against structured rubrics, checking technical accuracy, consistency, risk judgment, and adherence to underwriting guidelines.
- 5Flag unsupported assumptions, weak risk differentiation, misused policy terms, and inappropriate acceptance or declination decisions.
- 6Send written feedback to the research team so they can adjust model behavior.
- 7Attend onboarding office hours and calibration sessions.
Requirements11
- 1At least two years of professional P&C underwriting experience.
- 2Active underwriting experience in at least one major segment: personal lines, commercial property, general liability, commercial auto, package, umbrella/excess, professional liability, cyber, or another specialty line.
- 3Solid command of the underwriting lifecycle, from submission and assessment through quotation, binding, renewal, and nonrenewal.
- 4Ability to explain how account characteristics, jurisdiction, peril, loss experience, and market conditions affect underwriting outcomes.
- 5Strong written reasoning, sound risk judgment, and sharp attention to detail.
- 6Ability to distinguish underwriting decisions from claims handling, brokerage advice, and actuarial portfolio analysis.
- 7Preferred: a CPCU, AU, ARM, or comparable designation.
- 8Preferred: multiline underwriting authority.
- 9Preferred: experience with E&S, MGA/MGU, Lloyd's, or program business.
- 10Preferred: catastrophe-exposed property or high-severity casualty experience.
- 11Preferred: background in small commercial, middle-market, national-account, or high-net-worth segments.
Who Should Apply
Underwriters with real risk-selection authority and a track record of writing clear, defensible file notes will fit this project well. The work suits people who can explain their reasoning step by step and separate underwriting judgment from claims or broking perspectives. This role is less suitable for claims adjusters, brokers, or actuaries who have not made binding underwriting decisions. Candidates often get rejected when their experience is mainly supporting or reviewing someone else's decisions, not owning the accept/decline call. Another common miss is submitting vague or unstructured written responses, since the grading task demands precision and explicit logic.
Salary Insight
The project pays a flat $800 one-time fee, not an hourly rate. Your effective hourly rate depends on the hours you log; using the stated 20-hour minimum gives $40/hour, and a more experienced underwriter who finishes faster will earn more per hour. Fixed fees like this are standard for short, targeted AI training projects.

Application Tip
Submit a writing sample or a brief cover letter that shows how you documented a recent underwriting decision, including the factors that drove your pricing or acceptance. This role is judged on written reasoning, so a concise, structured example of your own underwriting logic will boost your fit score.
