Overview

Mercor is coordinating a remote, task-based engagement for an AI lab training frontier models on insurance reasoning. The work requires senior claims practitioners to design realistic disputed-coverage scenarios, write golden reference responses at a senior technical standard, and grade model outputs against structured rubrics. Participants will handle coverage-position analyses, litigation-management plans, reserve rationales, and escalation recommendations. The role demands 20 or more hours per week and begins immediately.

What You'll Do7

  • 1Design realistic claim scenarios that involve disputed coverage, reservations of rights, excess exposure, multiple insureds, and high-severity settlement strategy.
  • 2Create work products such as complex claim strategies, coverage-position analyses, authority requests, litigation-management plans, reserve rationales, and escalation recommendations.
  • 3Write golden reference responses that meet senior technical claims quality standards.
  • 4Grade AI-generated responses against structured rubrics covering policy analysis, strategic judgment, factual support, stakeholder awareness, and escalation discipline.
  • 5Flag claim-handling positions that are internally inconsistent, unsupported by the record, operationally unrealistic, or outside a non-lawyer claims professional's authority.
  • 6Provide written feedback that the research team uses to improve model behavior.
  • 7Participate in onboarding office hours and calibration sessions.

Requirements9

  • 12+ years of professional experience handling complex, litigated, high-severity, or coverage-sensitive insurance claims.
  • 2Experience evaluating coverage issues and developing claim strategies involving multiple parties, layers, policies, or jurisdictions.
  • 3Understanding of insurer duties, reservation-of-rights practices, litigation management, settlement authority, and escalation to internal or external counsel.
  • 4Ability to distinguish an operational coverage position from formal legal advice and recognize when specialized legal review is required.
  • 5Exceptional written reasoning, defensible judgment, and high attention to detail.
  • 6Comfort reviewing incomplete records and clearly separating facts, assumptions, open issues, and recommended next steps.
  • 7Preferred: CPCU, AIC, SCLA, ARM, or comparable insurance designation.
  • 8Preferred: Experience with excess casualty, professional liability, directors and officers, cyber, environmental, construction-defect, or other complex lines.
  • 9Preferred: Experience overseeing TPAs, independent adjusters, experts, or panel counsel.

Who Should Apply

Senior carrier claims leaders, complex-claims specialists, and coverage directors with multi-party, high-severity file experience will fit this work well. People who handle only routine first-party claims or lack exposure to litigated coverage disputes will find the evaluation standards too demanding. A common rejection reason is presenting examples that do not show coverage-depth or litigation strategy. Another is failing to distinguish operational claim positions from formal legal advice, which this role actively tests.

Salary Insight

The project pays a flat $800 one-time fee. This is a fixed payment for the full engagement, not an hourly rate, so the effective hourly value depends on your work pace and the 20-hour weekly minimum.
