Technical Accounting & SEC Reporting Specialist | $80-$120/hr Remote
Listing checked September 4, 2026 · pay as published by Mercor
Overview
Mercor partners with a top-tier AI research organization to improve how its models handle technical accounting and external reporting. As a specialist, you'll take your real-world experience in drafting memos, preparing SEC filings, and applying tricky ASC guidance, then turn it into training exercises that teach AI to think like a CPA. The focus lies squarely on ASC 606 revenue recognition, ASC 842 leases, ASC 718 stock compensation, and ASC 805 business combinations. This is a fully remote, hourly contract role where your feedback and example scenarios will shape the model's reasoning.
What You'll Do6
- 1Build realistic practice sets from your own technical accounting work, such as writing memos, preparing schedules, or drafting footnote disclosures.
- 2Craft scenarios that mimic actual 10-K and 10-Q filings to test the AI's ability to apply new or complex ASC standards to real transactions.
- 3Check AI-generated answers against technical accounting rules and determine if the conclusions and supporting arguments hold up.
- 4Provide concise, written critiques that help the model improve its judgment on revenue, leases, stock comp, and business combinations.
- 5Work asynchronously with the research team to refine the training materials and feedback methods.
- 6Review and edit AI content to spot deviations from authoritative guidance before it gets used elsewhere.
Requirements7
- 1Originated from a Big 4 firm or a public company's technical accounting or SEC reporting group.
- 2Hands-on familiarity with ASC 606, ASC 842, ASC 718, and ASC 805, not just limited audit exposure.
- 3Active CPA license or equivalent credential in accounting.
- 4Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field.
- 5Strong written communication and the ability to explain technical accounting decisions clearly.
- 6Demonstrated ability to spot subtle errors in disclosures or revenue recognition models.
- 7Comfort working in a remote, asynchronous environment with occasional deadlines.
Who Should Apply
This role is for a senior technical accountant who has personally prepared or reviewed technical accounting memos, SEC filings, or complex entries under ASC 606, 842, 718, or 805. If you come from a pure audit background without hands-on application of these standards, you won't fit the profile. Candidates get rejected when their resume shows only generic audit or financial reporting duties without deep, concrete examples of applying specific ASC guidance or drafting disclosure language. The role also demands precise written feedback, so vagueness in answers or covering letters is a red flag.
Salary Insight
The rate is $80 to $120 per hour, which falls in the upper tier for contract technical accounting roles. This range typically matches someone with five or more years of experience, a CPA, and significant exposure to complex ASC areas, rather than a generalist.
