Scala Engineer for AI Training Content & Evaluation
Overview
Remote contract role focused on shaping AI training data through Scala and the JVM. Review AI-generated code, system designs, and technical explanations, delivering high-quality reference implementations and step-by-step reasoning for complex problems. You will assess AI outputs for correctness, safety, performance, and context, with a focus on concurrency and distributed systems behaviors. This work supports SME Careers' AI data services, helping improve models used by developers worldwide and providing clear, testable references for training content.
What You'll Do5
- 1Design AI training content by writing prompts on Scala and JVM topics and delivering high-quality reference answers.
- 2Assess AI outputs to improve accuracy, safety, performance, and contextual relevance.
- 3Test AI results for concurrency and distributed-systems edge cases.
- 4Create model explanations and reference implementations that demonstrate correct methods for complex engineering tasks.
- 5Rank and compare multiple AI responses to identify the best reasoning quality.
Requirements11
- 1Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related technical field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- 24+ years of professional Scala production experience.
- 3Expert-level proficiency in Scala 2.13+ and/or Scala 3, with strong understanding of the type system, implicits/givens, collections, and functional patterns.
- 4Strong JVM fundamentals including memory model, garbage collection, profiling, and troubleshooting production issues.
- 5Deep experience with concurrency and effect systems (cats-effect, ZIO) and/or actor-based systems (Akka/Pekko).
- 6Experience designing and operating distributed services: microservices, messaging/streaming, retries, idempotency, backpressure, and consistency tradeoffs.
- 7Strong testing practices (ScalaTest, MUnit, ScalaCheck) and familiarity with CI/CD workflows.
- 8Comfort with build tooling and dependency management (sbt, Maven/Gradle interop) and version control best practices.
- 9Minimum C1 English proficiency (written and spoken).
- 10Prior experience with AI data training, annotation, or evaluating AI-generated technical content is a strong plus.
- 11Highly detail-oriented and systematic with a methodical approach to Scala/JVM systems.
Who Should Apply
Experienced Scala engineers who have shipped backend services or data platforms and are comfortable with distributed architectures. This role may not fit candidates lacking hands-on work with concurrency, actor models, or JVM performance tuning. Look for demonstrable projects showing production Scala code, testing strategies, and CI/CD involvement. Strong English communication is essential to document findings and explain technical reasoning. If your background centers on scripting or non-distributed systems, this role might not align with your experience.
Salary Insight
Pay: $70 per hour. This hourly rate reflects specialized, mid-senior level Scala backend work on AI data training and evaluation performed on a remote contract basis.
