P&C Actuary & Portfolio Risk Manager | $800 One-Time Remote
Overview
Mercor is helping an AI lab train frontier models on insurance reasoning by bringing in working P&C professionals. You will design pricing, reserving, and portfolio-management scenarios, then grade AI outputs against actuarial standards. The work covers products like rate indications, reserve reviews, portfolio diagnostics, and sensitivity analyses. Your written feedback goes to the research team, so clear communication matters as much as technical accuracy. This remote role is open to candidates in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
What You'll Do7
- 1Build realistic scenario sets that cover loss costs, rate indications, trend, development, credibility, segmentation, reserving, profitability, capital, catastrophe exposure, and portfolio concentration.
- 2Produce work products such as pricing analyses, reserve reviews, portfolio diagnostics, assumption critiques, sensitivity analyses, and management recommendations.
- 3Write reference answers at the level of an experienced actuary or portfolio risk manager so they serve as golden examples for model training.
- 4Score AI-generated answers using structured rubrics that judge mathematical accuracy, assumption quality, methodology, interpretation, and communication.
- 5Catch calculation errors, unsupported assumptions, misapplied actuarial methods, correlation-and-causation confusions, and recommendations that stray from the data.
- 6Give written feedback to the research team to guide model improvements.
- 7Attend onboarding office hours and calibration sessions to align on grading standards.
Requirements7
- 12+ years in P&C actuarial work, insurance pricing, reserving, catastrophe modeling, or portfolio risk management.
- 2Hands-on experience analyzing insurance premium, exposure, claim, loss, or reserve data.
- 3Solid grasp of the line between account-level underwriting judgment and portfolio-level actuarial analysis.
- 4Ability to explain methods, assumptions, limitations, and business implications to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
- 5Strong quantitative reasoning, precise writing, and close attention to detail.
- 6Proficiency with spreadsheets plus at least one analytical or statistical tool.
- 7Preferred qualifications include ACAS/FCAS progress, work with personal/commercial/specialty/reinsurance portfolios, and experience in catastrophe, capital, predictive modeling, or rate filing.
Who Should Apply
The ideal candidate is an active pricing or reserving actuary, a portfolio analyst, a catastrophe-risk professional, or an actuarial manager who has spent at least two years working with real insurance data. You should be comfortable writing clear evaluation notes and defending your reasoning, because the role is about teaching AI to think like an experienced actuary. This role is less suitable for life or health actuaries without P&C exposure, and for people who prefer long-term employment over a one-time task-based project. Candidates often miss the mark when their experience stays at the underwriting or broker level rather than portfolio-level actuarial analysis, or when they cannot show concrete examples of pricing or reserving work products.
Salary Insight
The pay is a flat $800 one-time fee for the engagement, not an hourly wage. With a stated minimum of 20 hours per week, the effective hourly rate depends on total hours spent, so ask for the expected scope and workload before starting. A flat $800 fee is typical for short, task-based consulting projects where the deliverable is graded data rather than ongoing employment.

Application Tip
Show a sample pricing or reserve review you have written, then explain how you would adapt it into a graded reference answer for an AI model. Quantify your years of P&C experience and name the specific analytical tools and lines of business you have worked in.
