Insurance Domain Expert | $60-$100/hr Remote
Overview
Insurance and actuarial professionals with deep practice experience will shape how frontier AI models reason about real insurance work. You will review model outputs and insurance knowledge tasks for professional accuracy, write the instruction specs and golden answers that define correctness, and design benchmarks that track model progress. The position is full-time W-2 employment with Cincinnatus LLC, with placement inside a leading AI lab's research and program management teams. Work is hybrid in the Bay Area, California, with on-site presence required multiple days each week. The role is not remote.
What You'll Do4
- 1Evaluate insurance knowledge tasks and model outputs for professional quality, flagging weak reasoning, wrong actuarial assumptions, misused policy terms, and polished answers that would not survive expert review.
- 2Write instruction specifications and golden reference answers for insurance and actuarial problems, and propose new task formats that mirror real-world workflows.
- 3Design difficult insurance evaluation sets and benchmark tasks, and collaborate with research teams to build domain-specific tools and skills.
- 4Align evaluation standards with client researchers and specialists in related fields, converting implicit professional judgment into explicit, teachable criteria.
Requirements9
- 1Hold an actuarial credential such as FSA, ASA, FCAS, or ACAS, or an active state insurance license in adjusting, underwriting, or broking (for example, an all-lines adjuster license).
- 2Actuarial candidates need a degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, or another quantitative field.
- 3Bring at least 4 years of substantial insurance experience at a carrier, reinsurer, broker, adjusting firm, or insurance regulator.
- 4Show genuine depth in a specific insurance domain such as life and annuity, group life and disability, property and casualty, health, reinsurance, pricing and reserving, enterprise risk management, claims adjudication, or underwriting.
- 5Demonstrate senior-level progression in your career, with ownership of a book, a reserve, or a claims portfolio, in titles like Actuary, Senior Actuary, AVP, Director, Chief Actuary, Claims Manager, or Head of Underwriting.
- 6Use large language models hands-on in your current professional work and know how to separate a well-reasoned answer from a plausible but incorrect one.
- 7Make yourself available for 40 hours per week for an initial 6-month engagement.
- 8Live in the Bay Area or relocate there at your own cost, and attend on-site work with the client multiple days each week as needed.
- 9Write clear, precise, well-structured feedback in English.
Who Should Apply
The ideal candidate is a practicing insurance or actuarial specialist with 4+ years in a carrier, reinsurer, broker, or regulator, who uses large language models daily and can judge model output against professional standards. This role suits someone who owns a portfolio, reserve, or book and can translate real-world judgment into explicit evaluation criteria. Less suitable are generalists, consultants, or academics who lack hands-on insurance practice, and people who cannot commit to a hybrid Bay Area schedule. Common rejection reasons include having credentials but no deep specialization, showing LLM familiarity only at a hobby level, or being unable to articulate how they would evaluate a nuanced actuarial answer.
Salary Insight
The pay rate is $60.00 to $100.00 per hour. For a W-2 contract with benefits, this range aligns with senior actuarial and insurance specialists in the Bay Area, where deep domain expertise is the primary driver.
