Medical Coder
Listing checked October 7, 2026 · pay as published by Micro1
Overview
micro1 is looking for Medical Coders to bring their outpatient coding skills to a project that trains next-generation AI systems. You will work with real clinical records, assigning ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPCS codes and applying E&M leveling rules. No AI background is needed. Your coding knowledge is the core requirement. This is a remote contractor role based in the United States.
What You'll Do6
- 1Review and annotate outpatient medical records from physician offices, clinics, ambulatory surgery centers, and hospital outpatient departments.
- 2Assign accurate ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPCS codes based on the documentation in each record.
- 3Apply Evaluation & Management leveling for outpatient visits using official guidelines, whether through medical decision making or total time.
- 4Use outpatient coding conventions such as diagnosis coding rules, modifier usage, medical necessity checks, and linking diagnoses to procedures.
- 5Communicate with project stakeholders in writing and in calls to clarify requirements and resolve unclear documentation.
- 6Give detailed feedback on coding guidelines and edge cases to help improve project workflows and model understanding.
Requirements6
- 1Active AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification.
- 2Solid grasp of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding systems and outpatient E&M leveling guidelines.
- 3Direct experience coding in outpatient settings such as primary care, specialty clinics, ambulatory surgery centers, or hospital outpatient departments.
- 4Familiarity with different clinical documentation types, including office visit notes, procedure notes, and operative reports.
- 5Clear written and verbal communication skills with close attention to detail.
- 6Access to current official ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding books plus E&M guidelines.
Who Should Apply
This role fits coders who hold an active AAPC CPC credential and have coded outpatient encounters across settings like primary care, specialty clinics, or ambulatory surgery. You should be comfortable reading varied documentation, from office notes to operative reports, and applying E&M leveling rules without hesitation. The job is less suited to coders whose experience is mainly inpatient or who lack the required certification. A common reason candidates get rejected is not having hands-on outpatient coding experience, even if they know the code sets. Another is not having current coding books or E&M guidelines on hand, which the project expects you to use.
