Overview

micro1 seeks a Certified Inpatient Medical Coder to support a client project aimed at improving medical data accuracy and integrity. The role involves applying inpatient coding expertise to train next-generation AI systems, shaping how models learn and reason from real-world clinical input. You will review inpatient records, validate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding, and assess AI-generated clinical notes against documentation standards. This is a contract position open to U.S.-based candidates working remotely.

What You'll Do8

  • Analyze inpatient medical records to verify accurate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding according to current guidelines.
  • Check clinical documentation for completeness, accuracy, and coding integrity.
  • Determine principal and secondary diagnoses, sequence codes per Official Guidelines, and assign Present on Admission (POA) indicators.
  • Validate MS-DRG assignment, including identification of CCs and MCCs, and flag hospital-acquired conditions (HACs) and patient safety indicators.
  • Compare AI-generated clinical notes and summaries with real-world documentation and coding standards.
  • Code diagnostic and procedural information from AI-generated content using ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS systems.
  • Resolve discrepancies in diagnosis and procedure coding to maintain record abstraction and data capture integrity.
  • Provide written feedback on coding errors and complex cases to help improve model performance.

Requirements8

  • Active certification such as CIC, CCS, or another AHIMA or AAPC credential (e.g., RHIA, RHIT, COC).
  • Experience with inpatient ICD-10-CM/PCS coding.
  • Access to current official ICD-10-CM/PCS coding books and Coding Clinic guidance.
  • Current work in inpatient medical coding, clinical documentation improvement, or a closely related documentation role.
  • Availability of at least 10 hours per week.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify coding discrepancies.
  • Comfort evaluating AI-generated clinical content against documentation standards.
  • Clear written communication skills for providing feedback on coding errors.

Who Should Apply

Certified inpatient coders with active CIC, CCS, or equivalent AHIMA/AAPC credentials and hands-on ICD-10-CM/PCS experience. You should currently work in inpatient coding or CDI and have at least 10 hours per week to contribute. Familiarity with MS-DRG validation and POA indicators is key.
