Overview

Mercor needs a seasoned mechanical engineer to design evaluation tasks that test AI reliability in real-world product design and manufacturing. You'll work across two standards tracks: ASME for US and ISO for international settings. Your core output: engineering scenarios, reference solutions, and rubrics that capture how senior F500 engineers make decisions. Expect to draw on your experience with SolidWorks, ANSYS, CATIA, and PLM systems like Teamcenter or Windchill.

What You'll Do5

  • 1Create full-scale mechanical engineering scenarios that reflect real product design cycles, including multi-stakeholder design reviews, manufacturing handoffs, and certification hurdles common at large industrial firms.
  • 2Develop tasks spanning CAD modeling, thermal and fluid analysis, structural and stress checks, manufacturing process design, and failure mode investigations.
  • 3Build problem sets that rely on professional-grade tools: SolidWorks, ANSYS, CATIA, MATLAB/Simulink, and enterprise PLM stacks like Teamcenter or Windchill.
  • 4Apply methodologies like FEA/CFD, DFM/DFA, Six Sigma/DFSS, and GD&T (per ASME Y14.5 or ISO GPS) to craft reference specs, detailed analyses, and clear technical narratives for executives.
  • 5Write rubric criteria that separate genuine enterprise engineering judgment from generic responses that only show textbook or coursework familiarity.

Requirements4

  • 1Five or more years as a mechanical engineer or engineering lead at a Fortune 500 or equivalent-scale industrial player (think GE, Boeing, Caterpillar, Ford, Honeywell, Siemens, Bosch, Rolls-Royce, or Mitsubishi Heavy Industries).
  • 2You've owned large product designs, manufacturing process rollouts, or certification programs end-to-end.
  • 3You're fluent with enterprise design tools and methodologies, and you understand what it takes to meet safety standards and pass regulatory checks (e.g., ASME, ISO, FAA, FDA) in a cross-functional setting.
  • 4A PE license or global equivalent (CEng, EUR ING) is a plus, as is experience writing rubrics, training curriculum, or detailed design documentation.

Who Should Apply

This role suits a senior engineer who has spent years inside a corporate engineering organization and can articulate how decisions actually get made. You'll be comfortable walking through the trade-offs that happen in a design review or a production ramp. If you're more comfortable in a classroom or research environment, or if your experience is purely academic, this likely isn't the right fit. Candidates often miss out when they can't show concrete examples of leading large-scale projects or when they only know the tools at a surface level.

Salary Insight

The rate is $70–$80 per hour, depending on experience. That sits at the upper end for remote mechanical engineering consulting, aligning with what specialists who have deep industrial track records and regulatory knowledge typically earn.

Application Tip

Highlight 2–3 specific projects where you owned a product design or manufacturing process through to certification, and mention which ASME or ISO standards you applied. Show how you've used tools like ANSYS or Teamcenter in those examples.

Civil Engineering Expert

Working with Mercor, you'll craft evaluation materials that teach AI systems how senior civil engineers approach major infrastructure projects. This role centers on the kind of judgment that only comes from years of real-world design, permitting, and delivery work. It sits on two possible rails: US standards (ASCE, ACI, AISC, AASHTO) or international standards (Eurocodes, ISO). You'll define scenarios, work out reference solutions, and write scoring guides that separate expert thinking from textbook answers.
