Overview

Working with Mercor, you'll craft evaluation materials that teach AI systems how senior civil engineers approach major infrastructure projects. This role centers on the kind of judgment that only comes from years of real-world design, permitting, and delivery work. It sits on two possible rails: US standards (ASCE, ACI, AISC, AASHTO) or international standards (Eurocodes, ISO). You'll define scenarios, work out reference solutions, and write scoring guides that separate expert thinking from textbook answers.

What You'll Do5

  • 1Build out detailed civil engineering problem sets that mirror the full arc of large infrastructure projects, from initial design through regulatory sign-offs and construction oversight.
  • 2Create tasks that touch every core discipline: structural, transportation, water/environmental, geotechnical, and construction management.
  • 3Write scenarios that demand fluency in industry tools like AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, STAAD.Pro/ETABS, and HEC-RAS, plus the project management platforms that run large public works.
  • 4For each challenge, solve it using real methodologies, from structural load analysis to geotechnical assessment and hydraulic modeling. Align your work with either the American codes (ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360, AASHTO LRFD) or the Eurocode set (EN 1990-1998) and ISO. Then produce the reference design documents, calculations, and reports you'd hand to a client or regulator.
  • 5Design scoring rubrics that tell AI systems what separates an experienced engineer's decision from a textbook answer.

Requirements5

  • 1Five or more years as a practicing civil engineer, with part of that time in a leadership role.
  • 2Direct ownership of large infrastructure projects, covering design, permitting, or construction delivery.
  • 3Working knowledge of regulatory approvals, environmental reviews like NEPA (or an international equivalent), and how public agencies operate.
  • 4A PE license (or CEng, EUR ING, P.Eng) is strongly preferred, as is prior experience writing engineering rubrics, training materials, or formal design documentation.
  • 5Hands-on familiarity with the software and analytical methods used across civil engineering disciplines.

Who Should Apply

This role fits a civil engineer who has owned large infrastructure from concept to closeout, and who can translate that know-how into structured evaluation content. If you've spent years making judgment calls under regulatory and public pressure, you'll recognize the kinds of scenarios we need. It's less suited for someone who only does pure design without touching permitting, environmental review, or stakeholder management. Common reasons candidates don't make the cut: they can't point to direct responsibility for a major project, or they lack the expected credential (PE or equivalent) despite strong technical skills.

Salary Insight

The rate is between $70 and $80 per hour, depending on your background and the complexity of the standards you work with. That pricing sits comfortably for senior engineers with the kind of direct project ownership and regulatory familiarity this work demands.
