Overview

SME Careers, a SuperAnnotate subsidiary, needs a Japanese quality lead to protect the standard of the Japanese training data that feeds large foundation models. You review AI-generated Japanese text and the work of trainers and QA reviewers against project rubrics, then write feedback that helps contributors fix accuracy, tone, and keigo problems. Most of the job runs through Discord, Google Sheets, and shared docs, where you post guideline updates, answer grammar and localization questions, and nudge inactive contributors back into the workflow. The engagement is hourly, remote, and freelance, and your judgment decides how natural and culturally accurate Japanese output looks to the client.

What You'll Do8

  • Spot-check Japanese samples and the output of trainers and QAs, flagging errors in grammar, kana and kanji use, tone, and meaning.
  • Send targeted written feedback by direct message and escalate repeated or serious problems to project leads.
  • Post guideline revisions, workflow changes, and quality expectations to Discord so trainers and QAs work from the same standard.
  • Answer contributor questions on keigo, register, translation fidelity, terminology, cultural context, and tricky edge cases.
  • Reach out to contributors who have gone quiet, track follow-ups, and report availability gaps.
  • Build and maintain Japanese style guides, FAQs, trackers, honeypots, example banks, and onboarding packs.
  • Run onboarding and training calls that walk new contributors through rubrics, workflows, and Japanese-specific rules.
  • Audit recurring quality gaps and design QA steps that hold up as the contributor pool grows.

Requirements8

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Japanese, linguistics, translation, communications, journalism, English, education, quality assurance, or a closely related field.
  • Native or near-native Japanese with strong reading and writing skills.
  • Solid English for reading project guidelines, coordinating with the team, and writing clear feedback.
  • 3+ years of professional work in Japanese writing, editing, translation, localization, content QA, AI training, teaching, annotation, or similar language review.
  • Deep command of Japanese grammar, kana and kanji usage, punctuation, keigo, tone, register, honorifics, and Japan-specific cultural context.
  • Ability to judge content against detailed rubrics and catch mistranslation, literal phrasing, wrong keigo, ambiguous references, hallucinated claims, and inconsistent terminology.
  • Comfort with Discord, Google Sheets, Google Docs, trackers, dashboards, and project management tools.
  • Strong organization for keeping style guides, FAQs, trackers, honeypots, and onboarding material current.

Preferred Qualifications3

  • Prior lead or support role for a remote team of trainers, annotators, reviewers, editors, or QAs.
  • Background in AI training, data annotation, LLM evaluation, or prompt and response review.
  • Hands-on experience with rubric-based LLM QA.

Who Should Apply

The role suits a Japanese language expert with three or more years in editing, translation, localization, or content QA who has reviewed other people's work against a rubric. You catch a wrong honorific or a literal translation, and you write English feedback contributors can act on. Experience guiding a remote review team helps.

Salary Insight

The posted rate runs $40 to $55 per hour, paid hourly on a freelance basis. That band matches senior language QA and localization review work, where native-level Japanese and rubric experience push you toward the top of the range. No project starts right away, so hours begin once a matching engagement opens.
