Overview
Mercor runs this project alongside a leading AI research lab, and the work sits at the intersection of Japanese language expertise and model evaluation. You spend your hours judging how well a large language model handles Japanese text: translation output, summaries, dialogue, grammar correction. Beyond scoring, you clean and shape Japanese training data, tag grammatical and semantic features, and flag the patterns where the model goes wrong. Researchers use your notes to decide what to fix next, so the feedback you write carries real weight in the training loop.
What You'll Do7
- Score Japanese text produced by the model for accuracy and natural phrasing across tasks such as translation, summarization, dialogue, and grammar correction.
- Rewrite or edit Japanese content so it meets native-level linguistic and cultural expectations.
- Tag Japanese passages for grammatical, syntactic, and semantic features.
- Log model errors and language gaps in a form researchers can act on.
- Write detailed linguistic analyses that inform the next round of model training.
- Work with AI researchers to translate your findings into concrete model improvements.
- Keep judgments consistent across reviewers by following shared annotation guidelines.
Requirements6
- Native or near-native Japanese, with firm command of grammar, syntax, and style.
- Hands-on background in Japanese translation, editing, linguistic annotation, or NLP data work.
- Sharp ear for nuance, regional variation, and context-appropriate usage.
- Keen eye for subtle errors and phrasing that reads as unnatural to a native speaker.
- Clear written communication and comfort working with a distributed remote team.
- Interest in AI and language technology helps, though the source marks it as preferred rather than required.
Who Should Apply
Japanese-language specialists with professional translation, editing, or annotation experience who want their linguistic judgment to shape an LLM. If you catch unnatural phrasing fast and can explain why a sentence fails, this project fits.
Salary Insight
$50.00/hr applies to this hourly engagement. That sits toward the upper end for Japanese-language annotation and evaluation work, which usually lands closer to entry-level rates unless the project demands native fluency plus a track record in translation or NLP data.
