Overview

Mercor pairs experienced English language specialists with a research lab to test and improve how a large language model handles English text. Your day centers on reading model output across tasks like translation, summarization, dialogue, and grammar correction, then judging where it lands and where it misses. You also shape the linguistic data that goes back into training, annotating samples and rewriting passages that break grammar, syntax, or register rules. Researchers rely on the written feedback you produce to decide what the next training round should target.

What You'll Do8

  • Score model-written English for accuracy and quality across translation, summarization, dialogue, and grammar correction tasks.
  • Rewrite or edit English passages so they meet native-level grammar, style, and cultural expectations.
  • Mark up text for grammatical, syntactic, and semantic features that feed the annotation pipeline.
  • Log recurring model failures and language gaps with enough detail for researchers to trace the cause.
  • Write up linguistic analysis that guides upcoming training rounds and evaluation cycles.
  • Flag regional variation and context-dependent usage that a model may read as an error.
  • Work with AI researchers to turn evaluation findings into concrete model improvements.
  • Keep annotation records consistent so results stay comparable across batches and reviewers.

Requirements6

  • Native or near-native English fluency with firm command of grammar, syntax, and stylistics.
  • Hands-on background in translation, editing, linguistic annotation, or NLP data work.
  • Keen eye for nuance in tone, register, and regional usage.
  • Track record of catching subtle errors and unnatural phrasing in written text.
  • Comfort writing clear analysis and feedback for a distributed, remote team.
  • Interest in LLM-driven language technology helps, though the team does not require it.

Who Should Apply

English language specialists with translation, editing, or annotation experience who want their judgment to shape model training. Candidates who notice a misplaced comma or an off-register phrase and can explain why it matters tend to do well here.

Salary Insight

This role pays $50.00 per hour. Hourly rates at that level sit near the upper end for linguistic annotation and evaluation work, and they usually go to people with professional editing or translation backgrounds rather than entry-level annotators.
