Overview

Mercor runs this project alongside a leading research lab, and the work sits at the point where French language expertise meets model evaluation. You will judge how well a large language model handles French across tasks such as translation, summarization, dialogue, and grammar correction, then reshape the text where it falls short. A large share of the job is linguistic annotation, tagging French samples for grammatical, syntactic, and semantic features that researchers can act on. Your notes on errors and awkward phrasing feed straight back into LLM training cycles, so the quality of your judgment shapes what the next model version gets right.

What You'll Do7

  • Review French output from a large language model and score its accuracy and naturalness across translation, summarization, dialogue, and grammar correction tasks.
  • Rewrite or edit French passages so they meet native-level linguistic and cultural standards.
  • Tag French text for grammatical, syntactic, and semantic features used in model training.
  • Log recurring model errors and language gaps in structured form for the research team.
  • Partner with AI researchers on fixes that raise French performance across the model's outputs.
  • Deliver written linguistic analysis that explains why a given output fails or succeeds.
  • Compare regional French variants and flag usage that reads wrong for a target audience.

Requirements7

  • Native or near-native French, with firm control of grammar, syntax, and stylistics.
  • Prior professional work in translation, editing, linguistic annotation, or French NLP data.
  • Keen eye for subtle errors, unnatural phrasing, and context-dependent word choice.
  • Working knowledge of regional variation across French-speaking markets.
  • Clear written communication suited to remote, distributed research teams.
  • Comfort with structured annotation guidelines and consistent labeling at volume.
  • Interest in AI and language technology helps, though the team does not require it.

Who Should Apply

French translators, editors, and annotators who have handled French NLP data and want their language judgment to shape model behavior. Candidates who notice a clumsy sentence before they can explain why it is clumsy will settle in fast here.

Salary Insight

$50 per hour is the stated rate for this engagement, paid hourly rather than as a fixed project fee. That sits at the stronger end for French linguistic annotation and evaluation work, which typically lands lower unless the project calls for deep NLP annotation experience.
