Insurance Actuarial Specialist - AI Lab Project
Listing checked September 22, 2026 · pay as published by Mercor
Overview
Mercor works with a leading AI lab to train frontier models on insurance reasoning data. The project needs Insurance Actuarial Specialists who can build realistic pricing, reserving, and risk-modeling scenarios. You will evaluate model answers against established actuarial standards and help shape how AI handles probability, loss estimation, and financial risk. Actuaries from life, health, property and casualty, pensions, retirement, and enterprise risk backgrounds all fit, whether you come from an insurer, reinsurer, consultancy, or corporate actuarial team. The role starts now, with applications reviewed on a rolling basis, and asks for at least 20 hours each week.
What You'll Do7
- 1Craft realistic case studies that cover ratemaking, loss reserving, valuation, experience studies, assumption-setting, and profitability analysis.
- 2Produce pricing models, reserve reviews, actuarial memos, technical assumptions, and results summaries.
- 3Draft gold-standard reference answers that match the quality of an experienced actuarial professional.
- 4Score AI-generated answers with structured rubrics that test method soundness, calculation accuracy, assumption support, and clear writing.
- 5Flag weak methods, calculation errors, unsupported assumptions, and missing rationale.
- 6Send written feedback that the research team uses to improve model behavior.
- 7Attend onboarding office hours and calibration sessions.
Requirements10
- 1Bring at least 2 years of professional actuarial experience in any practice area.
- 2Show how methods, assumptions, and data shape pricing, reserves, and valuation.
- 3Choose a suitable method, run the analysis, and explain a defensible conclusion with a documented rationale.
- 4Apply strong quantitative analysis, balanced judgment, and close attention to detail.
- 5Tell actuarial analysis apart from underwriting decisions and from formal financial or legal advice.
- 6Preferred: hold or pursue ASA, FSA, ACAS, FCAS, CERA, or MAAA credential.
- 7Preferred: work across multiple practice areas or specialty lines.
- 8Preferred: bring reinsurance, capital modeling, or enterprise risk experience.
- 9Preferred: use R, Python, SAS, SQL, or actuarial software such as Prophet, Emblem, Radar, or ResQ.
- 10Preferred: handle regulatory filings, rate filings, or statements of actuarial opinion.
Who Should Apply
The ideal candidate has at least two years of actuarial work behind them and can move from method selection to a documented conclusion without hand-holding. Practice area matters less than the ability to explain assumptions, spot calculation errors, and write a clear rationale. This role suits actuaries who want to shape AI reasoning about insurance risk, not those seeking underwriting authority or formal financial or legal advisory work. Candidates often score low when they describe general insurance knowledge instead of walking through a specific ratemaking or reserving method. Another common miss is treating the task as data labeling alone, when the work demands professional actuarial judgment and written defense of each answer.
Salary Insight
The role pays $80.00 per hour. That rate sits near the upper end for contract actuarial review work and matches someone with at least a few years of professional experience, such as those holding or pursuing actuarial credentials. Hours vary, with a 20-hour weekly minimum and 40+ hours preferred, so total weekly pay depends on the schedule you commit to.

Application Tip
Name the actuarial software and methods you know in your resume summary, then add one line that quantifies a pricing, reserving, or capital project you led. For example, state the line of business, the method, and the size of the reserve or rate change. That gives reviewers a fast signal that you can produce golden responses and grade model output against actuarial standards.
