Insurance Underwriting Specialist (Remote)
Listing checked September 22, 2026 · pay as published by Mercor
Overview
Mercor partners with a frontier AI lab to improve how large models handle insurance reasoning. The team needs underwriting specialists to create realistic risk scenarios and judge model answers against industry standards. You will shape training data around risk selection, policy provisions, pricing, and coverage calls. Underwriters from life, health, property, casualty, commercial, personal, specialty, marine, surety, and reinsurance backgrounds can apply. Work happens remote on an hourly basis.
What You'll Do7
- 1Build realistic scenarios that test risk selection, exposure review, policy terms, exclusions, endorsements, pricing, and coverage decisions.
- 2Produce work samples such as underwriting decisions, risk assessments, rating rationales, coverage analyses, and referral write-ups.
- 3Write golden reference answers that reflect the quality of an experienced underwriting professional.
- 4Score AI-generated responses with structured rubrics that measure risk-selection accuracy, provision interpretation, pricing correctness, and judgment.
- 5Flag misread policy language, flawed risk classifications, pricing math errors, and missing rationale in model outputs.
- 6Send written feedback that the research team uses to refine model behavior.
- 7Attend onboarding office hours and calibration sessions.
Requirements9
- 12+ years of professional insurance underwriting experience in any line.
- 2Knowledge of how policy provisions, exclusions, endorsements, and rating factors drive coverage and price.
- 3Ability to weigh risk, exposure, and financial evidence and defend a decision with a documented rationale.
- 4Strong written analysis, balanced judgment, and close attention to detail.
- 5Clear separation between underwriting decisions, sales or agent recommendations, and formal legal advice.
- 6Bonus: CPCU, CLU, AINS, ARM, AU, FALU, or a similar credential.
- 7Bonus: underwriting across multiple lines, specialty risks, reinsurance, treaty, or facultative work.
- 8Bonus: actuarial, pricing, or catastrophe-modeling exposure.
- 9Bonus: regulatory filings, compliance, or audit review experience.
Who Should Apply
An ideal candidate has at least two years of underwriting experience in one or more lines and can explain how exclusions, endorsements, and rating factors change coverage and price. You should enjoy documenting a decision so another professional can follow the risk, exposure, and financial evidence behind it. Credentials such as CPCU, AINS, or ARM help, as does work in reinsurance or specialty risks. This role fits less well if your background centers on sales, agent recommendations, or legal advice rather than underwriting decisions. Candidates often lose fit when they submit vague experience summaries or cannot show a structured rationale for a past risk decision.
Salary Insight
The engagement pays $80.00/hr. That rate sits at the high end for contract underwriting work and matches professionals with several years of line-specific experience, advanced credentials, or specialty and reinsurance exposure. Hours start at 20 per week, with 40+ preferred, so weekly pay depends on the schedule you commit to.

Application Tip
Attach a short underwriting decision memo from a real or anonymized file. State the risk, the policy provisions and exclusions you weighed, the rating factors, your decision, and the rationale. Name your line, years of experience, and any credentials such as CPCU or ARM. That evidence gives reviewers a concrete view of how you reason.
