SolidWorks Specialist | $40-$100/hr Remote
Overview
micro1 is hiring a remote contractor to support a mechanical design project that feeds real-world data into AI model training. You will work primarily in FreeCAD to build fully parametric models from written briefs, though strong SolidWorks skills translate directly. This role suits someone with deep parametric CAD modeling and DFM experience who wants to apply their expertise to a training dataset rather than a physical product. No prior AI background is needed, but your domain knowledge must be current and hands-on.
What You'll Do6
- 1Construct fully parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies from written specifications, ensuring the feature tree remains clean and constraints are precise.
- 2Modify existing parametric models to accommodate new technical requirements, documenting every change in detail.
- 3Review models for dimensional correctness, proper tolerance application, and manufacturability across multiple production processes.
- 4Apply DFM principles to designs intended for injection molding, sheet metal, CNC machining, and casting or forging.
- 5Translate design intent into structured CAD data that AI systems can learn from, keeping files organized and reproducible.
- 6Provide clear written reports and verbal updates to project coordinators, highlighting any issues or design trade-offs.
Requirements7
- 1At least 4 years of parametric CAD experience for editing models, and 10+ years for creating complex assemblies from scratch (in SolidWorks, FreeCAD, Fusion 360, or Inventor).
- 2Practical knowledge of GD&T per ASME Y14.5 or equivalent, applied in real manufacturing settings.
- 3Hands-on experience supporting at least two of these manufacturing methods: injection molding, sheet metal, CNC machining, or casting/forging.
- 4Currently active in mechanical or industrial CAD modeling, not just past experience.
- 5Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially for documenting design changes and decisions.
- 6Ability to reverse engineer parts from scans or point clouds (scan-to-CAD) is a significant plus.
- 7Experience with assembly-level modeling and optionally scripting CAD workflows via Python, iLogic, or VBA.
Who Should Apply
This role is ideal for a mechanical designer who enjoys the precision of parametric modeling and has deep manufacturing knowledge. You should be comfortable working independently in a remote contract setting, producing clean, well-documented CAD files. If you prefer designing physical products over preparing data for AI training, this may not be the right fit. Candidates often get rejected when their CAD portfolio lacks parametric discipline, or when they cannot demonstrate DFM experience beyond a single manufacturing process. Strong feature-tree management and tolerance application are non-negotiable, so highlight those in your application.
Salary Insight
The hourly rate is explicitly $40–$100 per hour, depending on experience and skills. The exact rate will be agreed upon during the hiring discussion, but this range is confirmed.

Application Tip
In your resume or cover letter, explicitly list the manufacturing processes you have supported (e.g., injection molding, sheet metal) and include a link to a parametric model that shows a clean feature tree and proper GD&T callouts. Mention any FreeCAD or scripting experience, as that directly aligns with the project's focus.
