Senior FreeCAD Engineer | $40-$100/hr Remote
Overview
This remote contractor role with micro1 puts your FreeCAD expertise to work training next-generation AI systems. You will build parametric models, refine assemblies, apply GD&T and DFM principles, and produce technical drawings. Your day-to-day involves validating models and conducting engineering QA, with Python scripting as a valued extra for automation. No prior AI experience is required; your mechanical engineering knowledge is what counts.
What You'll Do7
- 1Create and adjust parametric CAD models in FreeCAD to satisfy project requirements.
- 2Develop and refine mechanical assemblies with attention to component integration and assembly design best practices.
- 3Apply GD&T and DFM standards to guarantee manufacturability and quality.
- 4Produce clear technical drawings and documentation for engineering review and downstream use.
- 5Perform engineering QA on models and drawings, flagging and helping resolve issues.
- 6Use Python scripts to automate repetitive or complex modeling operations, when applicable.
- 7Share feedback on model accuracy, design intent, and process improvements during collaboration.
Requirements6
- 1At least 2 years of mechanical engineering, product design, or industrial engineering experience with a focus on parametric CAD.
- 2Advanced command of FreeCAD or an equivalent parametric CAD platform.
- 3Solid understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, including GD&T and DFM best practices.
- 4Proven ability to create comprehensive technical drawings and documentation for manufacturing and assembly.
- 5Experience verifying model integrity and compliance through engineering QA reviews.
- 6Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, plus clear communication for remote, project-based work.
Who Should Apply
The ideal candidate has at least 2 years of hands-on parametric modeling in FreeCAD, applies GD&T and DFM rigorously, and can produce and QA technical drawings. You should be comfortable working independently in a remote setup and communicating technical feedback clearly. This role is less suitable for engineers who lack deep FreeCAD experience or who prefer structured supervision. Common reasons candidates score low on fit include weak GD&T application, incomplete technical documentation, and minimal Python automation skills, which the team values even though it is not mandatory.
Salary Insight
The pay rate is $40 to $100 per hour, depending on your experience and skill level. The exact figure is discussed during the offer stage, but the range is explicit.

Application Tip
In your application, provide a sample or case study that shows how you applied GD&T and DFM to prevent a manufacturing issue, and if you script in Python, include a short automation example for a FreeCAD task to stand out.
