Mechanical Design Engineer CAD Manufacturing Remote
Listing checked September 26, 2026 · pay as published by Micro1
Overview
micro1 seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer to bring deep CAD and manufacturing knowledge to a customer's engineering project. Your main task is to produce and review engineering drawings, 3D models, and documentation that will help train next-generation AI systems. You will work with tools like SolidWorks, Fusion 360, and Onshape, applying GD&T and DFM principles. This is a remote contractor role, and no prior AI experience is needed. Your domain expertise is what matters.
What You'll Do8
- 1Generate and interpret professional engineering drawings that convey all details needed for manufacturing.
- 2Turn complex design requirements into clear, manufacturable CAD specifications with high accuracy.
- 3Build detailed 2D and 3D models using industry-standard software such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, Inventor, Creo, and NX, and reference models in FreeCAD.
- 4Apply advanced tolerancing, dimensioning, and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) to every deliverable.
- 5Document manufacturing processes and design intent in well-structured written and verbal formats.
- 6Review and critique existing engineering documentation to improve clarity and manufacturability.
- 7Provide insights on design for manufacture (DFM) and help refine parts for real-world production.
- 8Collaborate with remote team members and share constructive feedback on engineering work.
Requirements7
- 1Extensive industry experience in mechanical design, with parts taken from concept through to manufacturing.
- 2Expert-level proficiency in CAD software, demonstrated across multiple platforms like SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, Inventor, Creo, and NX.
- 3Hands-on knowledge of FreeCAD for interpreting or referencing models.
- 4Strong command of drafting standards, GD&T, tolerancing, and technical documentation for manufacturing.
- 5Deep understanding of manufacturing processes, material selection, and DFM best practices.
- 6Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, able to document decisions and explain engineering concepts clearly.
- 7Experience working on engineering projects remotely and giving feedback in a professional manner.
Who Should Apply
This role fits mechanical design engineers with years of hands-on CAD work and a track record of moving parts from concept to production. You should be comfortable with multiple CAD platforms, GD&T, and DFM, and you can explain engineering decisions in writing and speech. The job is less suitable for those who have only academic exposure or who lack real manufacturing experience. Candidates often get rejected when they list CAD tools without showing depth, or when they cannot provide examples of parts they have actually manufactured. If you have not worked with GD&T or drafting standards in a professional setting, your fit score will likely be low.
