Overview

micro1 is seeking experienced military operations and international humanitarian law experts to help train AI systems. In this remote contract role, you'll apply your deep domain knowledge to shape how AI models understand conflict, targeting, and ethical boundaries. No AI experience needed — your expertise in warfighting, defense operations, and IHL is what matters.

What You'll Do6

  • 1Build detailed taxonomies covering military and defense operations across various conflict environments.
  • 2Develop dual-use triage frameworks to clearly separate military applications of technology from civilian ones.
  • 3Define clear boundaries for prohibited assistance under international humanitarian law, providing structured input for AI training and evaluation.
  • 4Create conflict-risk rubrics and scenario-based evaluation tools to assess the operational and ethical impact of defense activities.
  • 5Review and refine policy-relevant benchmarks to ensure responsible AI testing in defense and humanitarian settings.
  • 6Produce written and verbal analyses that explain complex concepts in warfighting, targeting, and IHL to cross-disciplinary teams.

Requirements7

  • 1At least 5 years of relevant experience in military operations, defense analysis, or IHL; ideally 8–20 years for senior contributors.
  • 2An advanced degree (MA, LLM, PhD) or equivalent operational background in military science, security studies, international law, or related fields.
  • 3Proven credibility in warfighting, operational planning, targeting law, or humanitarian law application.
  • 4Deep understanding of conflict ethics, IHL, and defense policy frameworks and how to apply them in real-world situations.
  • 5Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to explain technical and ethical concepts clearly and succinctly.
  • 6Previous experience in research, policy analysis, or advisory roles within military, government, legal, or think-tank settings.
  • 7Prior work in conflict analysis, war-crimes investigations, or weapons-policy development is a significant plus.

Who Should Apply

This role is perfect for seasoned military officers, defense analysts, IHL specialists, or legal experts with a strong background in operational planning, targeting law, or humanitarian ethics. You should have at least 5 years of relevant experience (ideally 8–20 years), an advanced degree or equivalent operational expertise, and excellent communication skills. You're comfortable explaining complex concepts to non-specialists and are excited to apply your domain knowledge to influence AI systems at the crossroads of defense and ethics.
