What You'll Do8

  • 1Develop and solve mechanical engineering problems involving design, analysis, simulation, testing, or R&D, ensuring solutions meet physical and design constraints.
  • 2Convert physical systems and engineering requirements into analytical or computational models, including generating geometry, meshes, materials, loads, and boundary conditions.
  • 3Run structural, thermal, dynamic, fatigue, buckling, vibration, or multiphysics analyses using Python scripts to automate model setup, parameter sweeps, and postprocessing.
  • 4Evaluate simulation outputs such as stress, strain, displacement, temperature, heat flow, and safety factors, comparing them with hand calculations or experimental data.
  • 5Troubleshoot issues like invalid geometry, mesh failures, convergence problems, or unrealistic results, and adjust models accordingly.
  • 6Review AI-generated engineering solutions to spot reasoning errors, incorrect assumptions, or violated physical constraints, and provide clear feedback.
  • 7Create reproducible reference solutions and objective validation checks to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • 8Iterate on designs to improve performance, mass, strength, stiffness, thermal behavior, reliability, or manufacturability.

Requirements8

  • 1MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, or a BS plus 1-2 years of professional experience in design, analysis, simulation, testing, or R&D.
  • 2Strong grasp of applied mechanics and core mechanical engineering principles.
  • 3Hands-on experience building analytical, computational, or simulation-based solutions.
  • 4Practical proficiency with Python, including libraries like NumPy, SciPy, SymPy, pandas, Matplotlib, or Jupyter.
  • 5Familiarity with at least one engineering tool that can be operated via CLI, scripting, config files, or API, such as CalculiX, Gmsh, Elmer, FEniCSx, CadQuery, OpenSCAD, or OpenFOAM.
  • 6Ability to justify loads, boundary conditions, material properties, and model fidelity based on physical reasoning.
  • 7Skill in diagnosing simulation issues and judging whether results are physically plausible.
  • 8Clear communication of engineering decisions, limitations, and trade-offs.
