What You'll Do11

  • 1Solve and validate aerodynamic and fluid-dynamics problems across a range of scenarios.
  • 2Turn physical requirements into computational models and solver-ready cases.
  • 3Create or modify geometries, computational domains, and meshes as needed.
  • 4Set up initial conditions, boundary conditions, fluid properties, and solver settings.
  • 5Run CFD and aerodynamic analyses using command-line-accessible tools.
  • 6Use Python to automate preprocessing, simulation runs, parameter sweeps, postprocessing, and validation.
  • 7Analyze outputs like pressure, velocity, forces, moments, lift, drag, and pressure loss.
  • 8Troubleshoot issues with mesh quality, convergence, numerical stability, turbulence modeling, or boundary conditions.
  • 9Perform mesh-independence studies, sanity checks, and comparisons against analytical or experimental data.

Requirements9

  • 1MS or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering with a focus on aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, or thermofluids.
  • 2Alternatively, a BS in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering plus 1–2 years of aero-specific professional or research experience.
  • 3Strong grasp of fluid mechanics and applied aerodynamics.
  • 4Hands-on experience setting up and running CFD or aerodynamic analyses.
  • 5Practical proficiency with Python.
  • 6Experience with at least one engineering tool or library that works via CLI, scripting, config files, or a programmatic API (e.g., OpenFOAM, SU2, Gmsh, FEniCSx, Elmer, CalculiX, SciPy).
  • 7Ability to choose and justify modeling assumptions, boundary conditions, mesh strategies, and solver settings.
  • 8Skill in diagnosing non-convergence, unstable solutions, incorrect results, and physically invalid outputs.
  • 9Clear communication of technical reasoning and engineering trade-offs.
