Accounting & Audit Domain Expert | $60-$100/hr Remote

Hybrid · Bay Area, CA

Overview

An AI lab building frontier models is bringing in a senior accounting and audit specialist to act as the subject matter authority on work quality. You will review accounting and audit task outputs, write instruction specs and golden answers, and build evaluation benchmarks that measure real domain reasoning. You join the client's team as a W-2 employee of Cincinnatus LLC and receive client-issued equipment and accounts. Work is hybrid in the Bay Area, so you need to be on site several days a week and cannot treat this as a remote position.

What You'll Do4

  • 1Review accounting and audit knowledge tasks and model outputs for missing reasoning, misapplied standards, unsupported accounting treatments, and answers that look strong but fail under partner-level scrutiny.
  • 2Write instruction specs and golden solutions that define correct outputs for accounting and audit problems, and design new tasks based on real practice workflows.
  • 3Build evaluation sets and benchmarks that test domain depth and give client researchers a reliable signal of model progress.
  • 4Work with client researchers and specialists in adjacent fields to convert tacit accounting judgment into explicit scoring criteria and keep standards aligned across teams.

Requirements7

  • 1Active professional credential such as CPA, CA, CIA, CFE, or CMA, plus a bachelor's or master's degree in accounting or a closely related field.
  • 2Four or more years of substantive accounting or audit experience at a public accounting firm, corporate controllership, internal audit department, or regulator. Bookkeeping-only roles do not meet this bar.
  • 3Real depth in at least one domain, including external audit and assurance, technical accounting under US GAAP or IFRS, internal audit and SOX controls, tax, forensic accounting, or revenue recognition.
  • 4Career progression to a senior role such as audit manager, senior manager, controller, director, or partner, with clear ownership over engagements or reporting cycles.
  • 5Hands-on use of large language models in your daily professional work and the ability to tell a well-reasoned model answer from a plausible-sounding but incorrect one.
  • 6Ability to commit 40 hours per week for an initial six-month engagement, live in the Bay Area, and come on site with the client's team multiple days a week. If you are relocating, you bear the cost.
  • 7Strong written communication and the ability to give precise, structured feedback on complex technical material.

Who Should Apply

The right candidate is a practicing senior accountant or auditor who has already moved past pure execution and now owns outcomes: signing off on work papers, reviewing staff output, or advising on technical accounting positions. They use AI tools in their own workflow and can recognize when a model answer is fluent but unsupported by the underlying standards. This role is less suitable for bookkeepers, early-career accountants, or people who see AI as a separate interest rather than a day-to-day work tool. The main rejection reasons are a missing active credential, seniority that stops at staff level, no hands-on LLM use in current work, and an inability to meet the hybrid attendance requirement. Candidates who cannot get on site several days a week should not apply.

Salary Insight

The posted rate is $60-$100 per hour. The top of the range fits candidates who bring an active credential, deep domain specialization, and prior experience evaluating model output.

Application Tip

Show your grading judgment in the application. Pick one accounting or audit scenario you have reviewed in practice, describe the wrong but plausible answer a staff member or system produced, and write the criteria you used to reject it. That is the exact skill this role needs for instruction specs and golden solutions.
