Overview

Vulcan, a project at Mercor, builds evaluation tasks for the construction and property field. You work from real drawings, documents, and site photos to create review deliverables that mirror the job: an egress analysis, a correction list, or a plan review decision. You write both the task and its correct answer, then another reviewer in your discipline checks it before release. The work is remote and open to US-based fire and life safety professionals.

What You'll Do8

  • 1Build evaluation tasks from actual fire and life safety drawings, documents, and site photos.
  • 2Author correct answers for egress and life safety plan checks, fire access reviews, and plan review decisions.
  • 3Create scenarios that reflect fire alarm review from the design engineer seat and the fire marshal seat.
  • 4Cover sprinkler review from the engineer, fire marshal, and property insurer perspectives.
  • 5Add cases for hazardous materials control area review, fire occupancy video inspection, and firestop penetration photo checks.
  • 6Include fire system inspection, testing, and maintenance report review tasks.
  • 7Mark up plan sets and interpret hydraulic calculations and device layouts to support each task.
  • 8Align task content with IBC, IFC, and relevant NFPA standards.

Requirements6

  • 1Hold or have held a seat that reviews fire and life safety design: fire marshal, fire prevention plan reviewer, fire protection engineer, or sprinkler and fire alarm designer-reviewer.
  • 2Possess a fire marshal appointment, NICET Level III or higher, or a PE in fire protection.
  • 3Bring at least 3 years in that review seat, with 8 or more years preferred.
  • 4Work from a US base and apply IBC, IFC, and NFPA standards in practice.
  • 5Mark up plan sets and read hydraulic calculations and device layouts.
  • 6Show comfort with fire alarm and sprinkler design review from multiple seats.

Who Should Apply

Your background fits if you have spent years in a plan review or fire protection engineering seat and can read a plan set, hydraulic calculations, and device layouts without help. The strongest candidates hold a fire marshal appointment, NICET III+, or a PE in fire protection, and they know how IBC, IFC, and NFPA editions shape a review. People who trained junior inspectors, wrote correction language or an SOP, ran acceptance testing, or tracked changes across NFPA editions tend to do well. This role is not suited to firefighters or fire officers without plan review or inspection duty, sprinkler installers without design or review work, alarm technicians who service systems rather than design them, or general safety and OSHA specialists. Applicants often score low when they list field experience but cannot show direct plan review decisions, or when they cite standards without explaining which occupant load, travel distance, or coverage gap matters.

Salary Insight

The listing posts $45 to $60 per hour, with pay set by experience and a stated path to raise your rate as the project scales. That range lines up with senior contract work for fire protection engineers and plan reviewers who hold a PE, fire marshal appointment, or NICET III+ and several years in the seat.

Application Tip

Lead with the review seat you held, not a general safety title. Name the standards you apply, such as IBC, IFC, and NFPA 1, 13, 72, or 101, and give one concrete example of a plan review decision you made, including the occupant load, travel distance, or coverage gap you caught. Mention any NICET level, PE license, fire marshal appointment, and the number of years spent marking up plan sets or reading hydraulic calculations.

Civil Survey Engineer - Remote US Contract

Mercor builds evaluation tasks for the construction and property field, and this project needs civil and survey work turned into scored exercises. You start with real drawings, maps, aerials, and site documents, then produce the same deliverables a working reviewer would hand over: a plan review comment set, a survey exception schedule, or a measured read. You author both the task and its correct answer. A second reviewer in your discipline checks the work before it ships. The role covers civil grading, stormwater, roadway, utility, floodplain, and ALTA survey topics.

Architect Design Coordination - Vulcan Remote US

Mercor builds evaluation tasks for construction and property work, and this role centers on design coordination for permit and construction drawing sets. Each task begins with real drawings, documents, or site photos and asks for a deliverable you would produce on the job, such as an RFI response, a coordination comment set, or a marked-up set. You write both the task and the correct answer, then another reviewer in your discipline checks the work before it goes out. The project values people who can read cross-sheet conflicts and know what a rushed review might miss. US model code experience and Bluebeam Revu markup skills matter here.

Public Safety Hazardous Device Specialist

Neon needs public safety practitioners to red-team frontier AI models that handle dangerous technical requests. You will write single-turn prompts in the hazardous device domain, label each one as benign, dual-use, or adversarial, then judge how the model responds against a policy standard. Your day-to-day work centers on render-safe procedures, post-blast investigation, and CBRNE response, where routine professional questions sit close to misuse scenarios. Every judgment you make comes with a written rationale, including a reference answer that shows what a correct response looks like and why. The engagement runs remote and task-based, with a one-time payment of $75.

Nuclear Security Engineer (Remote, Task-Based)

A panel of nuclear materials and safeguards specialists will red-team frontier AI models for Mercor, testing how well a model judges misuse potential. You write single-turn prompts at three levels: benign, dual-use, and adversarial, then judge model replies against a policy standard and draft the reference answer with technical reasoning. The work sits on the dual-use line where a material-balance calculation can close an inspector's account or hide a gap. Expect sustained reading and writing about misuse scenarios, with briefings and freedom to pause without penalty.
