Civil Survey Engineer - Remote US Contract
Listing checked September 15, 2026 · pay as published by Mercor
Overview
Mercor builds evaluation tasks for the construction and property field, and this project needs civil and survey work turned into scored exercises. You start with real drawings, maps, aerials, and site documents, then produce the same deliverables a working reviewer would hand over: a plan review comment set, a survey exception schedule, or a measured read. You author both the task and its correct answer. A second reviewer in your discipline checks the work before it ships. The role covers civil grading, stormwater, roadway, utility, floodplain, and ALTA survey topics.
What You'll Do6
- 1Create evaluation tasks from civil grading plan review, erosion and sediment control plan review, stormwater design plan review, roadway plan check, and work-zone traffic control plan review.
- 2Write reference answers such as plan review comment sets, survey exception schedules, measured reads, and quantity verifications.
- 3Review utility service drawings, floodplain permit packages, civil RFI responses, landscape ordinance items, and tree protection plans.
- 4Verify earthwork quantities, stockpile volumes, ALTA Table A survey items, title survey exceptions, and closing survey setbacks.
- 5Check elevation certificate photos, assessor sketches, historic aerial and Sanborn map dates, topographic map stacks, and parcel data.
- 6Develop scoring guidance that separates items a reviewer takes on faith from items that need direct evidence.
Requirements6
- 1Hold or have held a civil engineer, land development engineer, land surveyor, geospatial analyst, or Phase I environmental analyst seat.
- 2Carry a PE in civil engineering or a PLS for survey and mapping work.
- 3Bring 3 or more years in that seat, based in the US, and show work that follows US standards and state DOT or local land development practice. The project prefers 8 or more years.
- 4Move between drawing sets, aerials, topographic maps, and parcel data without losing context.
- 5Show past review of submittals for an agency or DOT, mentorship of EITs or survey crews, project work through agency resubmittal cycles, or experience across several jurisdictions.
- 6Name how jurisdictions differ in what they check during plan review.
Who Should Apply
The strongest candidate sits in a civil, land development, or survey seat today or left one in the near past. That person holds a PE or PLS, has 3 or more years of US project work, and can discuss plan review, stormwater design, erosion control, ALTA surveys, and earthwork quantities with ease. Candidates who work with GIS layers alone, fly drones without survey credentials, or run environmental sampling instead of site plan review tend to score lower. Rejections often happen when an applicant cannot show direct review of engineered drawings or cannot name a single agency or DOT submittal they carried. The role also weeds out people with no PE or PLS when the task calls for survey or civil sign-off.
Salary Insight
The posting lists $45 to $60 per hour, and experience sets the rate. That band fits a senior reviewer who can carry PE or PLS credentials, 8 or more years in civil or survey work, and agency submittal history. A candidate with 3 to 5 years may land near the lower end. The source notes a path to raise your rate as the project scales. The source does not list benefits, overtime terms, or contract length.

Application Tip
Lead your application with your PE or PLS license, years in a civil or survey seat, and two or three review types you own: civil grading plan review, stormwater design plan review, ALTA Table A items, or erosion and sediment control. Name the jurisdictions or DOT agencies whose submittals you handled. Add a number, such as plan sets reviewed, resubmittal cycles closed, or earthwork quantities verified, so your fit score reflects real review work.
