Code Plan Reviewer (Plans Examiner) - Remote US
Listing checked September 15, 2026 · pay as published by Mercor
Overview
Mercor needs experienced plan reviewers to build evaluation tasks from construction and property work. You will create exercises around permit drawing sets, correction letters, review decisions, and marked-up plans that mirror what examiners produce on the job. Each task starts with real drawings, documents, or site photos. You write both the task and the answer key, then another reviewer in your discipline checks the work before it goes live.
What You'll Do12
- 1Create evaluation tasks from real permit drawing sets and project documents.
- 2Draft correction letters and review decisions that reflect actual code review outcomes.
- 3Mark up plan sets to show code compliance issues and required fixes.
- 4Measure and annotate drawings with Bluebeam Revu or a comparable tool.
- 5Build accessibility review tasks under ICC A117.1.
- 6Cover energy code drawing checks and IECC compliance points.
- 7Address occupancy classification questions, including storefront change of use.
- 8Review zoning site plans and permit intake completeness.
- 9Compare as-built conditions against permitted drawings to identify deviations.
- 10Design specialty occupancy tasks for healthcare facilities, schools, food service, and public pools.
- 11Write answer keys that explain the correct review outcome and code basis.
- 12Respond to feedback from a second discipline reviewer before task publication.
Requirements9
- 1Current or recent experience as a building department plans examiner, third party or private provider plan reviewer, or code consultant.
- 2ICC Building Plans Examiner certification (B1, B2, or B3), or active or recent work performing AHJ or third party plan review.
- 3Three or more years reviewing permit drawing sets for code compliance. Eight or more years preferred.
- 4US based and familiar with US model codes: IBC, IEBC, IECC, ICC A117.1.
- 5Ability to mark up and measure plan sets in Bluebeam Revu or equivalent software.
- 6Track record training junior examiners, maintaining a comment library, or building correction templates.
- 7Experience performing QA on other reviewers' work.
- 8Knowledge of how codes differ across editions and jurisdictions.
- 9No degree requirement.
Who Should Apply
Apply if you have spent at least three years reviewing permit drawing sets for code compliance in a US model code jurisdiction. The strongest candidates hold an ICC B1, B2, or B3 certification or have recent AHJ or third party plan review work, and they can mark up and measure plan sets in Bluebeam Revu. Experience training junior examiners or managing a comment library helps, and familiarity with several code editions sets you apart. This role does not suit general contractors, superintendents without plan review responsibility, estimators, CAD drafters, or permit expediters who file applications but do not review them. Candidates often lose fit when they list construction experience without direct plan review authority, or when they cannot show recent work in IBC, IEBC, IECC, or ICC A117.1.
Salary Insight
The rate is $45 to $60 per hour, set by your experience level. That band targets examiners with active ICC credentials or recent AHJ or third party plan review seats, and the top end tends to match eight or more years or QA lead work. Mercor says the rate can grow as the project scales.

Application Tip
Lead with your exact ICC certification (B1, B2, or B3) and name the US model codes you review: IBC, IEBC, IECC, ICC A117.1. Quantify your plan review experience, for example 'five years reviewing commercial permit sets in a large US city,' and mention any Bluebeam Revu markups or QA work you did on other reviewers' sets.

Mercor
VerifiedFire & Life Safety Reviewer (Remote, US)
Vulcan, a project at Mercor, builds evaluation tasks for the construction and property field. You work from real drawings, documents, and site photos to create review deliverables that mirror the job: an egress analysis, a correction list, or a plan review decision. You write both the task and its correct answer, then another reviewer in your discipline checks it before release. The work is remote and open to US-based fire and life safety professionals.

Mercor
VerifiedCivil Survey Engineer - Remote US Contract
Mercor builds evaluation tasks for the construction and property field, and this project needs civil and survey work turned into scored exercises. You start with real drawings, maps, aerials, and site documents, then produce the same deliverables a working reviewer would hand over: a plan review comment set, a survey exception schedule, or a measured read. You author both the task and its correct answer. A second reviewer in your discipline checks the work before it ships. The role covers civil grading, stormwater, roadway, utility, floodplain, and ALTA survey topics.

Mercor
VerifiedArchitect Design Coordination - Vulcan Remote US
Mercor builds evaluation tasks for construction and property work, and this role centers on design coordination for permit and construction drawing sets. Each task begins with real drawings, documents, or site photos and asks for a deliverable you would produce on the job, such as an RFI response, a coordination comment set, or a marked-up set. You write both the task and the correct answer, then another reviewer in your discipline checks the work before it goes out. The project values people who can read cross-sheet conflicts and know what a rushed review might miss. US model code experience and Bluebeam Revu markup skills matter here.

AfterQuery
VerifiedArchitect Expert - Remote Design Contract
AfterQuery creates evaluation and training data that frontier AI labs rely on to gauge model judgment in professional work. The company seeks licensed architects or architecture graduates to craft scenarios that move from schematic design through construction documents. You will write reference answers that explain the design choices and building codes logic behind each scenario. Then you will review AI output for design quality and code compliance, and call out designs that look polished on the surface but would fail plan review. Work runs remote and async, with a minimum of 10 hours each week and no ceiling.

AfterQuery
VerifiedConstruction Expert - Remote Contract Role
AfterQuery seeks construction professionals for asynchronous, project-based work. You review construction drawings, specifications and technical documents across commercial, residential, industrial or infrastructure projects. Assignments run over the next 2 to 3 weeks, and you choose projects that fit a 10 to 20 hour weekly commitment. The company is an early stage Y Combinator-backed startup. This contract lists 10 hours per week at $50.00 to $100.00 per hour and asks for a Contractor License (General / Trade). Your reviews hinge on building codes and construction fundamentals.

AfterQuery
VerifiedStructural Engineer Expert
AfterQuery hires structural engineers to create the evaluation content that frontier AI labs use to test model judgment in real design work. You will write load analysis and connection design scenarios, then supply reference answers that show the code and load path logic behind each call. Grading falls to you as well: model output needs checks for structural soundness, ASCE 7, ACI, or AISC compliance, and risks that look credible on paper but fail in practice. Work runs remote and async, with a minimum of 10 hours per week and no ceiling on hours. Contractors join ongoing project work rather than one-off batches.
