Public Safety Hazardous Device Specialist (Remote)
Listing checked September 15, 2026 · pay as published by Mercor
Overview
Neon needs public safety practitioners to red-team frontier AI models that handle dangerous technical requests. You will write single-turn prompts in the hazardous device domain, label each one as benign, dual-use, or adversarial, then judge how the model responds against a policy standard. Your day-to-day work centers on render-safe procedures, post-blast investigation, and CBRNE response, where routine professional questions sit close to misuse scenarios. Every judgment you make comes with a written rationale, including a reference answer that shows what a correct response looks like and why. The engagement runs remote and task-based, with a one-time payment of $75.
What You'll Do6
- 1Draft single-turn prompts that test model judgment on hazardous device topics, tagging each prompt as benign, dual-use, or adversarial.
- 2Review model outputs against a defined policy and decide if each response handled the request in a safe or unsafe way.
- 3Write reference answers that explain the correct response and the technical reasoning behind it.
- 4Use field experience to separate routine professional questions, such as storage or render-safe queries, from prompts that seek misuse details.
- 5Document each decision so readers without a bomb tech or EOD background can follow the logic.
- 6Flag cases where a model refuses a safe question or answers a dangerous one, and describe why the line was crossed.
Requirements8
- 1Certified bomb technician or hazardous device operator with hands-on device assessment and render-safe procedure experience.
- 2Military EOD background that includes civilian public safety, training, or instruction work.
- 3Bomb squad commander or training officer who has managed team qualification, equipment, and protocols.
- 4Post-blast investigation and device reconstruction experience.
- 5CBRNE technical response skills, including standoff assessment, robotics, and disruption tools.
- 6Strong technical writing, published research, or expert witness work, with a sample or link ready to share.
- 7Red-teaming experience is a plus, as is the ability to write clear rationales for non-specialists.
- 8You must not draw on classified or export-controlled information, or material under an NDA or prepublication review. If you hold those obligations, say so in your application so the team can scope the work.
Who Should Apply
The right candidate has assessed real hazardous devices under certification and command accountability. That means a certified bomb tech, EOD veteran, bomb squad commander, or CBRNE responder who can tell a routine storage or render-safe question from one that fishes for harmful details. People who lack device assessment experience, or who cannot explain their reasoning in writing, will find this role hard to score well on. Applications often fall short when candidates submit prompts that are too obvious or fail to include a technical writing sample or link. If you hold an NDA or export-control obligation, state that up front so the team can adjust the scope.

Application Tip
Submit a short technical writing sample or link, such as a published paper, expert witness report, or after-action review, that shows a non-specialist reader how you judge a render-safe or post-blast decision. Name any red-teaming work and your certification level in the first lines of your application.

Mercor
VerifiedEnergetic Materials Red Teaming Expert (Remote)
The panel tests frontier AI models on how they handle explosive and energetic materials requests. You write single-turn prompts split into benign, dual-use, and adversarial levels, then judge model replies against a fixed policy. Your reference answers show what a sound response looks like and explain the technical reasoning behind that call. The work matters because models both refuse routine mining or investigation questions and answer dangerous requests dressed as academic work. Energetic materials, red teaming, and AI evaluation sit at the center of the task.

Mercor
VerifiedRadiological Safety AI Red Team Expert (Remote)
Neon seeks radiological safety practitioners to red-team frontier AI models on a task-based engagement. You will craft single-turn prompts that sit on the dual-use line, label each one as benign, dual-use, or adversarial, then judge how the model handles the request against a set policy. The work matters because a useful model must answer routine dose, shielding, or isotope questions while refusing requests that seek misuse details. Your domain knowledge decides where that boundary falls, and your writing makes the call clear to people outside radiological safety.

VerifiedExplosives & Energetic Materials Expert (Remote)
Remote, full-time role auditing AI models for handling explosives and energetic materials questions. Classify each user prompt as benign, dual-use, or adversarial, and evaluate all three model outputs for safety and accuracy. Rank the three responses and craft the recommended final answer the model should have produced for the user query. This role blends domain expertise with AI governance to support reliable, regulation-aware model behavior.

Mercor
VerifiedChemical Defense Researcher - Remote Contract
Mercor is assembling a panel of chemistry and chemical safety specialists to red-team frontier AI models. You will write single-turn prompts in your domain, label them as benign, dual-use, or adversarial, and judge model answers against a policy standard. The work sits on the dual-use line in chemical defense, where the same toxicology that sets a countermeasure dose can also describe an exposure someone might intend. Practitioners with CWC verification, decontamination, or medical countermeasure experience can separate routine professional questions from probes for harmful detail. This remote, task-based engagement pays a one-time $75 fee.

VerifiedFederal Materials Specialist - Incident Analyst
A panel of energetic materials and propulsion experts will red-team frontier AI models. The goal: test whether a model can judge misuse potential in a technical request, answering legitimate questions while refusing dangerous ones. You will write single-turn prompts labeled benign, dual-use, and adversarial, then evaluate model responses against a policy standard. For each prompt, you also write the reference answer and the technical reasoning behind it. The domain sits on the dual-use line, where routine residue analysis can look like a recipe in reverse.

Mercor
VerifiedRadiological Emergency Response Specialist - Remote
This project brings together radiological safety experts to red-team frontier AI models. The panel tests whether a model can judge the misuse potential of a technical request, answering legitimate questions while refusing dangerous ones. Your domain sits on the dual-use line: the same isotope supports cancer therapy and industrial radiography, and the same shielding math protects a worker or hides a source. A model that refuses a routine dose question fails just as much as one that answers a harmful query. Radiological safety practitioners, not generalists, draw that line.
