Overview
Mercor hires senior civil engineers to build the evaluation material that trains AI systems working on major infrastructure and construction programs. You will design realistic engineering scenarios, write reference outputs, and author rubrics that separate genuine senior judgement from textbook recall. The work splits into two standards tracks: an International track built on Eurocodes and ISO, and a US track grounded in ASCE, ACI, AISC, and AASHTO. Engagement runs hourly, and the scenarios carry the design complexity, safety stakes, and regulatory scope of real public and private construction work.
What You'll Do7
- Design civil engineering scenarios that mirror full infrastructure design cycles, multi-party permitting reviews, and complex public works delivery.
- Cover a range of subfields: structural design and analysis, highway and transportation work, water resources and environmental engineering, geotechnical investigation, and construction project management.
- Build tasks around tools practitioners actually use, including AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, STAAD.Pro, ETABS, HEC-RAS, and enterprise project management platforms.
- Apply structural load analysis, geotechnical site assessment, and hydrology or hydraulic modeling to whichever standards track a given task targets.
- Anchor US track material in ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360, and AASHTO LRFD, and International track material in Eurocodes EN 1990 through EN 1998 and ISO.
- Produce reference design plans, engineering calculations, and technical narratives written for stakeholders and regulators.
- Write rubrics that capture how senior civil engineering leaders reason through a problem and what distinguishes that reasoning from coursework-level answers.
Requirements4
- At least 5 years of practice as a civil engineer or engineering lead.
- Hands-on ownership of large-scale infrastructure design, permitting processes, or construction project delivery.
- Command of civil engineering tools and methods, plus a working grasp of regulatory approvals, environmental review under NEPA or an international counterpart, and public agency oversight.
- Ability to work within a defined standards track and match calculations and documentation to it.
Preferred Qualifications2
- A recognized professional engineering credential such as a US PE, CEng, EUR ING, or P.Eng.
- Prior experience authoring rubrics, engineering training curricula, or design documentation.
Who Should Apply
Licensed civil engineers with 5 or more years on major infrastructure who want to shape how AI systems handle design, permitting, and construction judgement. Practitioners fluent in Eurocodes, US codes, or both will find the work maps directly onto their daily practice.
Salary Insight
This role pays $80.00 per hour. That rate sits well above typical freelance technical writing work and matches what firms charge for senior engineering consultation, so expect the bar to be set at genuine senior practitioner level.
