Overview
Handshake AI recruits civil and structural engineers who have run plan reviews to turn real building paperwork into test material for AI models. Drawing sets, specifications, and permit records from live projects become the raw material for review tasks that probe how well a model handles plan review and drawing-set coordination. Each task targets one workflow, whether that is code compliance, quality control on a set, or cross-checking sheets against one another. Projects open throughout the year across different areas of expertise, and the work runs alongside a full-time engineering job.
What You'll Do6
- Build review tasks from actual drawings, specifications, and permit records, with each task centered on a single workflow such as plan review, code compliance, or drawing-set quality control.
- Write the prompt that frames a task, then grade the model's attempt and name the exact points where it falls short.
- Spell out what a correct answer must contain so a response can be scored against fixed criteria.
- Send written feedback in a structured format that shows where the model's reasoning broke down.
- Cross-check structural and civil sheets against architectural and MEP drawings as part of task design.
- Set your own hours and work remotely. The program sets no schedule and no minimum hour count.
Requirements9
- Bachelor's degree or higher in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related field.
- Five or more years of professional engineering work on US building projects.
- Hands-on plan review background, whether you checked construction documents for code compliance, answered review comments as engineer of record, or served as a third-party reviewer.
- Working command of US building codes and engineering standards, applied on live projects.
- Ability to read a full construction document set, architectural through MEP, and cross-check the sheets against one another.
- US residency and authorization to work in the US, with experience grounded in US codes and US practice.
- Strong written communication and close attention to detail.
- Ability to explain engineering and code concepts in plain language.
- Comfort working on your own in a remote, asynchronous setup.
Preferred Qualifications5
- Professional engineer (PE) or structural engineer (SE) license.
- Master's degree in civil or structural engineering.
- Work across commercial, institutional, multifamily, healthcare, or mixed-use projects.
- Experience with jurisdictions in more than one state.
- Background in permitting and approvals, special inspections, or drawing-set quality control.
Who Should Apply
A US-based civil or structural engineer with five or more years on building projects and real plan review behind them. You have read full construction sets, know the codes that govern them, and can put a technical judgment into clear writing.
Salary Insight
$62.50 per hour. That rate sits well above typical contract pay for plan review and code consulting work, and it lines up with the seniority the role asks for: five or more years of US building experience plus hands-on review work.
