Overview

A leading AI lab needs an art director who has shipped real brand work to sharpen how its generative models handle design. You will build training tasks straight from agency workflows: brand identity systems, packaging dielines, out-of-home specs and campaign suites that span formats. Then you judge what the model produces, flag weak typography, broken grids and files that would fail prepress, and put that critique in writing. The commitment runs 40 hours a week on weekdays, and Cincinnatus LLC employs you on W-2 while you sit inside the lab's extended team.

What You'll Do5

  • Coach research teams on where model knowledge thins out across identity work, advertising and graphic design.
  • Write design briefs pulled from real agency practice, covering identity systems, packaging, out-of-home and multi-format campaign suites, and hand over reference solutions as editable source files.
  • Review AI-generated design output and commit your critique to writing, naming faults in typography, grids, hierarchy, color, print feasibility and cross-format consistency.
  • Build rubrics, guidelines and quality checks for design evaluation, including technical checks on vector and print-ready files.
  • Work alongside other subject matter experts so training data stays accurate and consistent from one batch to the next.

Requirements11

  • 5+ years of shipped commercial brand and advertising design as an art director or senior designer at a creative agency, brand consultancy, packaging studio or in-house brand team. Crowd rating and student work do not count.
  • Daily hands-on use of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Figma, plus InDesign for layout and print. You build the final files yourself rather than only directing others.
  • Brand identity systems delivered end to end: wordmark or logo, type system, color, iconography and guidelines, rolled out on real touchpoints.
  • Print production on packaging dielines or large-format out-of-home specs through to press-ready files, including bleed, safe zones, CMYK and Pantone specs and prepress checks.
  • Out-of-home and multi-format campaigns (billboards, transit, print, digital display, paid social in 1:1, 4:5 and 9:16) with localized versions for multiple markets.
  • Typography and grid craft, plus confident vector illustration and image retouching.
  • Fluency in editable source files and exchange formats: .ai, .psd, .fig, .indd, .svg, PDF/X, dielines and packaged print deliverables.
  • Hands-on generative AI practice in design work, for example Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, Ideogram, Stable Diffusion or Flux for imagery and type exploration, or Photoshop Generative Fill and Magnific for retouching, with the judgment to separate a strong result from one that only looks plausible.
  • A public portfolio or reel of shipped work. Expect to walk through it during the process.
  • Availability for at least 40 hours a week on weekdays.
  • Written communication strong enough to explain creative decisions to people outside design.

Who Should Apply

A working art director or senior brand designer with agency-side identity, packaging and out-of-home credits who already uses generative AI in daily design work. You build final files yourself and can defend your critique in writing. A public portfolio of shipped campaigns is part of the application.

Salary Insight

The role pays $70 to $120 per hour, and Cincinnatus LLC handles W-2 employment, payroll, benefits and compliance as employer of record. That band sits near the top of what independent art directors command, which fits the brief: five or more years of shipped agency work plus working fluency in generative AI tools.
