Overview
A serial Silicon Valley founder with several exits is incubating a batch of new AI companies inside his studio, and he needs a technical advisor who can step in at the earliest stage. The engagement starts at 2 to 8 hours per week across sequenced projects, with room to grow as those companies scale. You will audit existing codebases, set up workflows and documentation that let several contributors work in parallel, and configure Claude Code and similar AI-assisted development environments for shared use. Some weeks go to tracing stubborn bugs, others to shaping architecture calls for products still finding their shape. Live overlap with Pacific Standard Time hours is part of the deal.
What You'll Do6
- Audit the codebase and infrastructure of an early-stage AI startup and report what needs repair.
- Design project workflows and written documentation so a small team can touch the same code without friction.
- Set up and tune AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code for use by more than one contributor at a time.
- Trace complex bugs to their root cause and ship fixes that hold up.
- Advise on architecture choices that suit products shipping at early-stage speed.
- Stay available for engineering support as new features and capabilities come up across the portfolio.
Requirements7
- 4 or more years of hands-on software engineering at mid or senior level.
- Track record inside high-growth startups, working lean without layers of process.
- Comfort with AI-native development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or similar platforms.
- Practical experience building or configuring AI agents and automation frameworks.
- Ability to read an unfamiliar codebase and ship working solutions on your own.
- Clear written and verbal communication, including explaining technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
- Availability for live overlap with Pacific Standard Time hours.
Preferred Qualifications3
- Prior fractional or consulting engineering work
- Exposure to 0 to 1 product development
- Familiarity with AI studio or venture studio operating models
Who Should Apply
A senior engineer who has worked inside a lean startup and can pick up an unfamiliar codebase without hand-holding. You have built or configured AI agents or automation frameworks and know tools like Claude Code well. A consulting background helps, though the fit matters more than the label.
Salary Insight
$50 to $60 per hour, spread across 2 to 8 hours per week. That range lines up with senior contract engineering work involving AI tooling, and the light weekly commitment leaves room to keep other clients.
