Overview
MGT needs a senior independent contractor who can take a messy operational workflow and turn it into a working agent. The job opens with process mapping, moves through redesign, and ends with agents running in Azure Container Apps and Azure Function Apps. Builds lean on coding agents such as Codex and Claude Code, plus the company's wider orchestration layer. The contract runs 40 hours a week for a three-month term, with extension likely if the work lands. You report to the AI Practice Lead and need overlap with U.S. business hours.
What You'll Do7
- Map current-state workflows alongside business stakeholders, then redesign those processes around automation instead of digitizing the old steps.
- Architect and write agents from scratch with coding tools like Codex and Claude Code, keeping the code testable and maintainable.
- Deploy and run agents in Azure Container Apps and Azure Function Apps, covering packaging, configuration, secrets, scaling, and monitoring.
- Wire agents into the wider orchestration layer through multi-agent coordination, tool and data integrations, shared state, and handoffs.
- Select models and routing strategies that balance capability, latency, and spend, and keep token and compute budgets in check.
- Add evaluation, observability, error handling, and guardrails so each build can run against real business work.
- Identify where agents add the most value inside an operational workflow and make the case to stakeholders.
Requirements7
- A track record of building AI agents from scratch, not prompt tuning or no-code wiring, using coding agents such as Codex or Claude Code and agent frameworks.
- Strong command of orchestration: multi-agent patterns, tool use, retrieval, memory and state, and coordination inside a larger system.
- Hands-on Azure deployment work with Container Apps and/or Function Apps, including containers, triggers, scaling, configuration, and secrets.
- Experience mapping a workflow and reengineering it for automation while working directly with business stakeholders.
- Ability to choose the right model for a task and manage token and compute spend against cost, latency, and quality targets.
- A solid engineering base in Python and/or TypeScript, APIs, version control, testing, and CI/CD.
- Comfort shipping with minimal oversight and operating independently.
Preferred Qualifications5
- Agent evaluation and observability tooling, including eval harnesses, tracing, and prompt and version management.
- A background in management consulting, operations, or business-process reengineering.
- Familiarity with Azure AI services, Azure OpenAI, and other Azure data and integration services.
- Experience connecting agents to enterprise systems such as CRM, ERP, ticketing, or data warehouses.
- Prior work in a professional-services or client-delivery setting.
Who Should Apply
A senior contractor who has shipped agents to production on Azure and can sit with a business team to redraw a process before writing code. Bring Python or TypeScript depth, a working feel for model cost and latency tradeoffs, and the habit of adding evals and guardrails before launch.
Salary Insight
Pay runs $90 to $100 per hour on a 1099 engagement at 40 hours per week. That band fits senior contractor work in agent engineering, and a three-month term with a likely extension means the commitment stretches past the first build.
