Overview
Shrine Development seeks a senior QA engineer for a remote contractor role open to candidates in Costa Rica. You join an independent Quality group and work beside product engineering squads, helping them own unit, component, and service-level tests while you handle high-risk end-to-end automation. The work centers on test automation, CI/CD feedback loops, and risk-based test strategy across the SDLC. Expect to coach developers through shift-left practices, define quality standards, and use defect, coverage, and flakiness metrics to surface system-level problems.
What You'll Do8
- Lead testing strategy for assigned feature areas, set expectations for unit, component, and service tests that engineering teams own, and cover high-risk flows with end-to-end automation.
- Build, extend, and maintain automated test suites, then wire them into CI/CD pipelines so each change returns fast and dependable quality feedback.
- Coach developers on test design through pairing, code reviews, and workshops that make shift-left testing part of daily delivery.
- Turn business and technical risks into test plans, acceptance criteria, and documentation that product and engineering teams keep current.
- Write and refine quality standards, policies, and risk-based testing guides that match product needs and compliance rules.
- Track defect trends, coverage gaps, and flaky tests, then use those signals to expose systemic issues and guide improvement work.
- Brief engineering and product leaders on quality posture, risks, and tradeoffs, and avoid becoming a release bottleneck.
- Mentor junior QA staff and engineers on modern testing methods, observability-driven checks, and AI-assisted testing practices.
Requirements7
- 5+ years in software quality engineering, SDET work, or a comparable role centered on test automation and helping engineering teams own quality.
- Hands-on skill in one modern language such as TypeScript, JavaScript, or Python.
- Experience with current test frameworks such as WebdriverIO, Playwright, Cypress, Appium, or API and contract testing tools.
- Track record of adding automated tests and quality gates to CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or a similar system.
- Solid grasp of shift-left and DevOps methods, including developer-owned testing, trunk-based development, and continuous delivery.
- Ability to operate inside an independent Quality function while forming collaborative relationships with engineering groups.
- Strong communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to influence peers without authority, lead discussions, and align teams on quality goals.
Preferred Qualifications3
- Experience with observability tools and production signals used to shape testing strategy
- Familiarity with AI-assisted testing tools or LLM-based features for test generation, analysis, or automation
- Background in regulated or high-compliance settings where risk management and traceability matter
Who Should Apply
The ideal candidate brings 5+ years of QA or SDET experience, writes test automation in TypeScript, JavaScript, or Python, and has wired suites into CI/CD pipelines. You coach developers on shift-left testing and turn risk into clear test strategy. This contractor role suits a senior QA engineer based in Costa Rica who wants to shape quality without acting as a release gatekeeper.
