Overview

micro1 is seeking an experienced FreeCAD Mechanical Engineer for a unique contractor role: helping train next-generation AI systems. Your deep expertise in parametric CAD modeling, GD&T, and DFM will directly shape how AI models learn and reason about real-world engineering problems. This fully remote position focuses on creating precise models, assemblies, and technical drawings — no prior AI background required.

What You'll Do7

  • 1Build, edit, and validate detailed parametric CAD models using FreeCAD based on project specifications.
  • 2Design and refine mechanical assemblies, applying best practices for component integration and assembly logic.
  • 3Implement rigorous Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles to ensure designs are both accurate and production-ready.
  • 4Produce clear, comprehensive technical drawings and documentation for engineering review and downstream use.
  • 5Conduct thorough engineering QA on CAD models and drawings — identifying issues, documenting findings, and suggesting improvements.
  • 6Leverage Python scripting to automate repetitive or complex modeling tasks (highly preferred, not mandatory).
  • 7Collaborate remotely by offering constructive feedback on model accuracy, design intent, and process optimizations.

Requirements6

  • 12+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical engineering, product design, or industrial engineering with a focus on parametric CAD modeling.
  • 2Expert-level proficiency in FreeCAD or equivalent parametric CAD platforms.
  • 3Strong grasp of mechanical design fundamentals, including GD&T and DFM best practices.
  • 4Proven ability to create thorough technical drawings that support manufacturing and assembly processes.
  • 5Experience conducting engineering QA — verifying model integrity, compliance, and specification adherence.
  • 6Bonus: Proficiency in Python scripting for CAD automation and workflow efficiency.

Who Should Apply

This role is ideal for a seasoned mechanical engineer who thrives on precision and has deep experience with FreeCAD and parametric modeling. You enjoy applying GD&T and DFM to real designs and can produce high-quality technical documentation. Even if you've never worked with AI training, your domain expertise is exactly what we need — just be ready to collaborate in a remote, project-based environment.
