Manufacturing Design Engineer | $30-$100/hr Remote
Overview
This contractor role invites seasoned manufacturing design engineers to lend their expertise to a cutting-edge project: training the next generation of AI systems. Your deep knowledge of mechanical design and parametric CAD modeling is what matters — no prior AI experience is required. You'll use FreeCAD to create, validate, and document production-ready components, helping AI models learn from real-world engineering data.
What You'll Do6
- 1Build and refine detailed parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies using FreeCAD or comparable software.
- 2Produce thorough engineering drawings that incorporate GD&T and tolerance stack-ups, ensuring they're ready for manufacturing handoff.
- 3Design components suitable for a range of manufacturing methods, including sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, plastics, and injection molding.
- 4Conduct quality assurance reviews on CAD models to verify accuracy and production readiness.
- 5Write clear, concise technical documentation and assembly instructions that will serve as reference material for AI model training.
- 6Iterate on CAD models and supporting documents by incorporating feedback from technical reviewers.
Requirements7
- 1At least 2 years of hands-on experience designing mechanical components for manufacturing environments.
- 2Proficiency in FreeCAD or a similar parametric CAD platform for advanced modeling, assemblies, and drawing generation.
- 3Practical knowledge of design considerations for sheet metal, CNC, plastics, and injection molding processes.
- 4Solid grasp of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) best practices.
- 5Demonstrated ability to create production-grade CAD models and validate them against real-world manufacturability criteria.
- 6Strong written and verbal communication skills for clear documentation and collaboration.
- 7Experience with Python scripting for CAD automation is a plus but not required.
Who Should Apply
This role is perfect for a seasoned mechanical design engineer who thrives on precision and enjoys applying real-world manufacturing knowledge to help shape AI capabilities. You're comfortable using FreeCAD to produce detailed, manufacturable designs and have a solid foundation in DFM and GD&T. Even if you've never worked with AI, your domain expertise is the key ingredient here.
Salary Insight
The pay range is $30-$100 per hour, reflecting experience and expertise.
