Senior DoD Staff Writing SME (Remote, US)
Listing checked September 22, 2026 · pay as published by Micro1
Overview
micro1 seeks Senior DoD Staff Writing SMEs to support a customer project that trains next-generation AI systems. You will create realistic DoD staff writing artifacts, such as WARs, SITREPs, executive summaries, and performance reports, and build grading rubrics to evaluate AI outputs against federal standards. This is a remote contractor role open to US-based candidates. No prior AI experience is needed; your domain knowledge in military writing and federal documentation is what counts.
What You'll Do6
- 1Craft structured prompts, input artifacts, and golden responses for a range of DoD staff writing tasks, including WARs, SITREPs, executive summaries, and performance reports.
- 2Build grading guidelines that score AI-generated outputs for accuracy, tone, and compliance with DoD expectations.
- 3Produce authentic report artifacts that mirror the style, structure, and language of real-world DoD documentation across operational and administrative scenarios.
- 4Help design and review test materials that assess AI capabilities in summarizing and reporting tasks typically handled by federal personnel.
- 5Take part in feedback cycles to refine prompts, responses, and grading rubrics based on project needs and model performance.
- 6Apply back-office and communication experience to simulate weekly, monthly, and ad hoc reporting formats used in federal organizations.
Requirements7
- 1Former federal contributor for the U.S. Department of War (Department of Defense) with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
- 2Proven experience producing key reporting artifacts such as Weekly Activity Reports (WARs), Situation Reports (SITREPs), executive summaries, and similar standard formats.
- 3Background in one of the six branches of the U.S. military, with diversity of experience across different roles and units preferred.
- 4Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication, with clear attention to detail and audience-appropriate language.
- 5Familiarity with back-office tools and processes, including the production and formatting of PowerPoint briefings, memos, Excel summaries, and related documentation.
- 6Strong analytical skills for evaluating and providing constructive feedback on AI-generated staff writing outputs.
- 7US-based with an understanding of federal compliance, reporting requirements, and DoD-specific terminology and workflows.
Who Should Apply
This role fits former DoD or military personnel who have spent at least three years writing official reports like WARs, SITREPs, and executive summaries. You should be comfortable with back-office tools such as PowerPoint, Excel, and memo formatting, and you must be based in the US with a grasp of federal compliance and DoD terminology. The role is less suitable for candidates without direct federal or military writing experience, or those who have not produced standard DoD reporting artifacts. A common reason applicants get rejected is failing to show specific examples of reports they have written, such as a WAR or SITREP. Another is not demonstrating how their writing meets DoD standards for tone, accuracy, and compliance.
