Senior Backend Engineer (Node.js, TypeScript, Rust)
Listing checked September 23, 2026 · pay as published by Mercor
Overview
Mercor is placing a Senior Software Engineer on a platform team inside a large enterprise technology company. The services you build power customer-facing web and mobile experiences that reach millions of people. You will work with Node.js, TypeScript, and Rust across the full lifecycle, from design through CI/CD, while partnering with Engineering, UX, Product, Business, and Analytics. The team ships through continuous experimentation and customer feedback, and it folds generative AI into production services. This role is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week W-2 position with Cincinnatus LLC, with placement in the client's engineering organization as part of its extended workforce.
What You'll Do7
- 1Lead delivery of scoped features with cross-functional engineering teams, keeping work tied to platform and system goals.
- 2Design, build, test, and maintain services in Node.js, TypeScript, and Rust across the software lifecycle and CI/CD pipeline.
- 3Create and refine server-to-server integrations and API layers with REST and GraphQL for high-traffic customer applications.
- 4Add AI and machine learning capabilities to product services, and use generative AI tools to support engineering work.
- 5Shape solution design, review code, and apply practices for scalable, secure, maintainable systems.
- 6Watch application performance, resolve defects, and push continuous improvement.
- 7Coach peers and share knowledge to strengthen engineering standards across the team.
Requirements10
- 14 or more years of professional software engineering work, or a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field plus 3 years, with production systems at a recognized high-scale organization.
- 2Direct production coding in Node.js and TypeScript on the backend.
- 3Hands-on Rust work in production services, performance-critical modules, or substantial systems projects.
- 4Strong web fundamentals: HTTP semantics, cookies, headers, caching, sessions, and server-to-server patterns such as service auth, timeouts, and retries.
- 5A track record of building or running high-traffic, consumer-facing web platforms.
- 6GraphQL on Node.js, including schema design, resolvers, and federation, is a plus.
- 7Familiarity with web accessibility standards is a plus.
- 8Clear career progression to senior-level ownership.
- 9Availability for at least 40 hours per week on weekdays.
- 10Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain complex technical ideas to broad audiences.
Who Should Apply
The ideal candidate brings 4+ years of backend engineering experience at a high-scale company and can point to production work in Node.js, TypeScript, and Rust. You understand HTTP at a deep level, from caching and sessions to service-to-service auth, timeouts, and retries, and you have built or operated consumer web platforms that handle heavy traffic. This role fits engineers who have moved into senior ownership and can communicate technical tradeoffs to product, design, and analytics partners. Candidates who only have one of the three core languages, or whose Rust work is limited to side projects or academic exercises, often score low on fit. Another common rejection reason is a lack of detail about scale in past roles, such as traffic volume, latency targets, or the size of the systems you supported.
Salary Insight
The role pays $45 to $65 per hour. That range places the contract at the senior end of United States backend work, with the top of the band matching engineers who can show production Rust and high-traffic platform experience. Pay comes through W-2 employment with Cincinnatus LLC, which handles payroll and benefits.

Application Tip
In your application, name the exact systems you built with Node.js, TypeScript, and Rust, then quantify scale with traffic volume, latency, or request rates. Add one example of a GraphQL schema or federation change you owned, and one example of debugging a server-to-server auth or retry problem, because those details separate senior candidates from those who list tools without proof.
