Overview

micro1 seeks Military Operations & IHL Experts to support a defense-policy and humanitarian-law project. Your knowledge of warfighting, weapons targeting, defense operations, and international humanitarian law will help train next-generation AI systems. No AI background is needed. You will design frameworks that evaluate military and humanitarian scenarios, shaping how models reason about conflict ethics.

What You'll Do6

  • Build detailed taxonomies for military and defense operations across different conflict settings.
  • Create dual-use triage frameworks that separate military from civilian uses of technology and knowledge.
  • Define clear limits on prohibited assistance under international humanitarian law, giving structured input for AI training and evaluation.
  • Design conflict-risk rubrics and scenario-based tools to assess operational and ethical implications of defense activities.
  • Review and improve policy-relevant benchmarks for responsible testing of AI models in defense and humanitarian contexts.
  • Write and present analyses that explain complex warfighting, targeting, and IHL concepts to interdisciplinary audiences.

Requirements7

  • 5+ years of experience in military, defense analysis, or IHL; 8–20 years preferred for senior contributors.
  • An advanced degree (MA, LLM, PhD) or equivalent operational experience in military science, security studies, international law, or a related field.
  • A strong track record in warfighting, operational planning, targeting law, or humanitarian law application.
  • Expertise in interpreting and applying conflict ethics, IHL, and defense policy frameworks to real-world scenarios.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to convey technical and ethical concepts clearly.
  • Experience in research, policy analysis, or advisory roles within military, government, legal, or think-tank settings.
  • Prior work in conflict analysis, war-crimes investigation, or weapons-policy development is a plus.

Who Should Apply

The ideal candidate has deep hands-on experience in military operations or IHL and can translate that knowledge into structured frameworks for AI training. You might come from a military planning, legal advisory, or defense think-tank background and are comfortable explaining complex ethical and operational concepts to diverse audiences.
