Member of Technical Staff, Forward Deployed (US Gov) | $40-$60/hr Remote
Overview
This role is a unique blend of research and production engineering, focused on building and deploying applied AI systems for high-security government partners. You'll own projects from early experimentation through to production, working hands-on with large language models, reinforcement learning pipelines, and distributed inference infrastructure. Expect to work directly on-site with strategic partners in mission-critical environments, solving some of the most sensitive and high-impact problems in the AI space.
What You'll Do7
- 1Design and maintain robust data pipelines to support model training, evaluation, and ongoing research workflows.
- 2Create and iterate on reinforcement learning environments for experimentation and training advanced models.
- 3Develop, optimize, and scale model inference systems to handle real-world production loads.
- 4Build and maintain SDKs and integrations that connect our systems with leading AI platforms.
- 5Construct agentic systems—including multi-agent architectures, tool use, and retrieval-augmented generation—using modern LLM frameworks.
- 6Move projects from proof-of-concept prototypes to fully production-ready systems, ensuring reliability and security at every step.
- 7Collaborate directly with government and strategic partners in forward-deployed settings on sensitive, high-impact use cases.
Requirements7
- 1Proven ability as a strong Python engineer with end-to-end ownership of complex systems.
- 2Hands-on experience with large language models and agentic systems (e.g., LangChain, LangGraph, or equivalent frameworks).
- 3Track record of building and maintaining data pipelines or machine learning infrastructure in production.
- 4Familiarity with reinforcement learning workflows or simulation environments.
- 5Experience with distributed systems, inference scaling, or high-throughput serving.
- 6Comfortable operating in high-security, high-reliability environments and able to handle sensitive data and compliance requirements.
- 7Independent problem-solver who thrives in ambiguous, partner-facing situations and can take initiative without close supervision.
Who Should Apply
This role is ideal for a hands-on ML engineer who enjoys both building experimental AI systems and shipping production-grade software. You should be equally comfortable discussing architecture trade-offs with a partner in a classified facility as you are debugging a data pipeline. A strong sense of ownership, a bias toward action in uncertain environments, and comfort with high-security protocols are essential. If you've worked in government, defense, or other regulated domains—or have a deep interest in contributing to national security applications of AI—this is a unique opportunity.
Salary Insight
The advertised base salary range for this full-time position is $200,000–$250,000 USD. Additionally, all employees are eligible for equity compensation and may receive performance-based bonuses. The company also offers comprehensive benefits including up to 100% reimbursement for health-insurance premiums, paid time off, a 401(k) plan with employer match, and other perks designed for a remote-first workforce.
Required Skills
Application Tip
In your application, explicitly describe a project where you took an AI system from an experimental prototype to a production deployment in a secure or regulated environment. Highlight any experience working directly with end users or partners in high-stakes settings—this will demonstrate the forward-deployed mindset the role requires.
