Overview

The Hephaestus project at Mercor needs mechanical engineers to craft and check tasks that teach AI systems how product design, engineering analysis, and simulation work. You will build native CAD and analysis artifacts that hold up to physical review, with solver runs another engineer can repeat. Work can center on SolidWorks, ANSYS, OpenFOAM, or similar tools, and tasks span CAD assemblies, structural and thermal analysis, fluid mechanics, and manufacturing engineering. Each task pairs a realistic design problem with measurable outcomes and a verification path that fits the modeling method.

What You'll Do7

  • Frame engineering problems with native geometry, assemblies, materials, loads, boundary conditions, and design requirements that mirror real product work.
  • Build and debug analysis models for stress and deformation, thermal behavior, vibration, or fluid flow, then test mesh quality, convergence, sensitivity, and physical consistency for simulation tasks.
  • Produce reference solutions and repeatable CAD, FEA, or CFD workflows in tools such as SolidWorks, FreeCAD, CATIA, ANSYS, CalculiX, or OpenFOAM.
  • Set checks for dimensions, assembly relationships, mass properties, manufacturability, stress, displacement, temperature, pressure drop, and other outputs, using numerical checks, artifact review, and engineering judgment where each fits.
  • Package native files, solver settings, scripts, and results, and document assumptions and limits so a second engineer can reproduce the task.
  • Validate reference outcomes and incorrect cases, review AI-generated artifacts, and trace failures to the design, model setup, numerical method, or verification logic.
  • Apply standards and methods such as ASME or ISO, GD&T, DFM/DFA, and reliability analysis.

Requirements5

  • 5+ years of professional mechanical engineering experience, with ownership of product designs, engineering analysis, manufacturing processes, or validation work.
  • Recent hands-on depth in at least one CAD, FEA, CFD, or thermal-analysis workflow; expertise across every specialty is not expected.
  • Ability to automate analysis or inspect results with Python, MATLAB, shell scripts, or comparable tools, including coding-agent support when it helps.
  • Sound judgment on model fidelity, material behavior, boundary conditions, numerical convergence, and physical plausibility.
  • Clear technical communication and a disciplined approach to repeatable engineering work.

Preferred Qualifications4

  • Professional engineering credential
  • Prior test automation experience
  • Design documentation experience
  • Engineering-training experience

Who Should Apply

Mechanical engineers with 5+ years of hands-on product design, analysis, or validation work and depth in at least one CAD, FEA, CFD, or thermal workflow. The role suits someone who can automate checks with Python or MATLAB, document a repeatable solver run, and review AI-generated artifacts with sound engineering judgment.

Salary Insight

Writers earn $70-$80/hr, and reviewers earn $90/hr. The reviewer rate matches the added work of validating reference outcomes and diagnosing AI artifact failures, and the posting lists hourly pay with no annual salary figure.
