Overview

Mercor needs mechanical engineers for an AI research project with a major technology company. You will use your hands-on background in structural analysis, thermal systems, mechanical design, or dynamics and controls to judge real hardware problems. The work centers on evaluating designs, simulations, test plans, failure modes, and manufacturing risks rather than writing code. Engineers who have owned physical products from requirements through validation will find the tasks familiar. The engagement is remote and pays by the hour.

What You'll Do8

  • 1Bring practical mechanical engineering judgment to hard tasks tied to physical systems and products.
  • 2Review mechanical designs, analyses, simulation output, test methods, and troubleshooting plans.
  • 3Weigh trade-offs across structures, materials, thermal behavior, dynamics, vibration, controls, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • 4Check whether proposed solutions are sound and feasible for real hardware.
  • 5Flag bad assumptions, unrealistic boundary conditions, design gaps, failure modes, and reliability risks.
  • 6Create or review engineering problems, reference answers, evaluation rubrics, and technical notes.
  • 7Apply experience with design, simulation, prototyping, hardware integration, test, validation, qualification, debugging, and manufacturing.
  • 8Give clear technical feedback based on engineering principles and field experience.

Requirements8

  • 15+ years of professional mechanical engineering experience, with 3+ recent years of active hands-on work in hardware development, analysis, testing, validation, integration, bring-up, or troubleshooting.
  • 2Direct ownership as the responsible engineer for real hardware or physical systems across requirements, analysis, design, prototyping, test, validation, qualification, and manufacturing readiness.
  • 3Deep expertise in at least one area: structural/stress analysis and FEA; thermal analysis, heat transfer, and thermal management; mechanical design and product development; or dynamics, vibration, mechanisms, and controls.
  • 4Working command of materials, loads, boundary conditions, structural margins, fatigue, thermal limits, tolerances/GD&T, component selection, reliability, manufacturability, system integration, and failure-mode analysis.
  • 5Hands-on experience analyzing, testing, debugging, and validating physical hardware with CAD/CAE, FEA, CFD/thermal simulation, dynamic or controls simulation, test instrumentation, data acquisition, and root-cause analysis.
  • 6Hardware development in production or manufacturing settings, such as aerospace/defense, space, automotive/EV, semiconductors, consumer electronics, robotics/eVTOL, industrial/energy, or medical devices.
  • 7Ability to explain technical choices, design trade-offs, test results, and failure mechanisms.
  • 8Preferred background at a company that designs, builds, tests, and manufactures hardware products or systems.

Who Should Apply

Mechanical engineers with at least five years in industry and recent hands-on ownership of physical hardware will match this project best. The strongest candidates can point to designs they analyzed, built, tested, and pushed into production, and they can defend decisions about loads, materials, tolerances, thermal limits, or vibration. People who have spent recent years only in program management, people management, or academic research may find the bar hard to clear. Applicants often lose fit scores when they list broad CAD familiarity without showing a specific hardware lifecycle, or when they cannot explain failure modes and test evidence from their own work.

Salary Insight

The role pays $100 to $120 per hour. That range sits above many contract mechanical engineering rates and matches senior engineers with deep domain expertise and recent hardware ownership. Compensation follows hours worked, and the exact point in the band likely depends on domain depth and interview performance.

Application Tip

In your application, name one physical system you owned from requirements through validation. Include the analysis tools you used, such as FEA, CFD, or CAD, and give a concrete result like mass saved, thermal margin improved, or a failure mode you caught during test. Tie that example to one core domain: structural analysis, thermal management, mechanical design, or dynamics and controls.
