Overview
AfterQuery builds the expert evaluation and training data that frontier AI labs use to measure how models handle real professional work. As a contract historian, you write the source analysis and historical reasoning scenarios those evaluations run on, then grade what the models produce against your own reference answers. The work stays inside your period and region, and reviewers judge it on rigor rather than volume. Fully remote and async, with a 10 hour weekly minimum and no ceiling on hours.
What You'll Do7
- Draft historical scenarios that test genuine method, from source criticism through competing explanations of cause and effect
- Produce reference answers that show the evidentiary reasoning behind each reading, including what the sources support and what they leave open
- Score model responses on factual accuracy, context, and awareness of historiography
- Call out answers that sound assured but flatten the evidence, invent causal links, or read present-day assumptions into the past
- Weigh conflicting sources and state plainly what they do and do not establish
- Write with argument, not just a sequence of events
- Take on live project work in your specialty once onboarding finishes, usually within a week
Requirements8
- Advanced degree in history or a closely related field
- At least two years of teaching, research, archival, or published historical work
- Depth in a specific period or region, backed by hands-on primary source experience
- Clear written English suited to documenting historical reasoning step by step
- Availability of 10 hours per week or more
- PhD and peer reviewed publications preferred
- Prior archival research or public history work preferred
- Reading knowledge of the research languages your field relies on preferred
Who Should Apply
Historians who hold an advanced degree, have two or more years of teaching, research, archival, or published work behind them, and can defend a reading of conflicting sources in plain prose. Specialists in any period or region are welcome, provided real primary source work sits behind the specialty.
Salary Insight
