Full-Stack Software Engineer | $50-$80/hr Remote
Overview
Mercor is building an AI frontier advancement project and needs experienced full-stack engineers to make it happen. The core work involves drafting precise product specifications that machines can validate, then constructing complete reference implementations that pass every criterion you set. You'll also author browser-driven acceptance criteria that focus on what users truly experience, not internal code details. This is a remote, hourly contract paying $50-$80/hr, ideal for engineers who like turning vague ideas into testable, functional realities.
What You'll Do5
- 1Write detailed product specifications that a skilled developer could follow to build the app, while keeping them unambiguous enough for automated grading to score accurately.
- 2Develop a full working version of each specification, ensuring it meets every acceptance criterion you've defined.
- 3Create acceptance tests at the browser level that verify real user-visible behavior, steering clear of underlying implementation specifics.
- 4Run frontier AI models against your tasks, then adjust difficulty until performance lands within the desired target range.
- 5Verify that each task fails cleanly when given an empty repository, so no criterion can be satisfied without genuinely building the feature.
Requirements6
- 1At least three years of professional full-stack engineering experience, including shipping and maintaining live web applications.
- 2Strong command of at least one modern frontend framework and one backend runtime, with enough familiarity to work across several.
- 3Hands-on production experience with authentication, permissions, payment flows, and file uploads, plus an understanding of where each typically breaks.
- 4Excellent ability to specify a system precisely in writing, because the specification and its criteria are the actual product.
- 5Everyday comfort using Docker, git at the commit level, and command-line tooling.
- 6Prior experience building evaluations, benchmarks, or test suites for AI systems is a strong plus.
Who Should Apply
This role is tailor-made for a full-stack engineer with at least three years of production experience and a passion for turning fuzzy concepts into clear, testable specifications. If you're someone who thrives on writing detailed requirements and building reference implementations that pass your own checks, you'll fit right in. On the flip side, if you're primarily a front-end or back-end specialist without the other half, or you dread creating technical documentation, this position may feel uncomfortable. Common reasons candidates get rejected include a lack of concrete examples of past specs or test suites, and insufficient depth in handling auth, payments, or file uploads in real-world scenarios. Strong applications also demonstrate how they've calibrated task difficulty or validated failure with an empty repository.
Salary Insight
The rate is $50 to $80 per hour, which is competitive for a remote full-stack contract role and typically reflects a mid-to-senior engineering level. Since the work demands precision writing and AI evaluation know-how, the upper end of the range aligns with candidates who can prove that expertise.

Application Tip
To stand out, include a sample of a product specification you've written along with its reference implementation, and explain how you verified that the implementation passed your acceptance criteria. Highlight any experience with AI evaluations or benchmarks, and quantify the results, such as how you tuned difficulty to hit a target performance band.
