TypeScript Engineer - Codebase Q&A (Remote)
Listing checked September 11, 2026 · pay as published by Mercor
Overview
Mercor needs seasoned TypeScript engineers to shape a reinforcement-learning dataset that helps AI agents reason about real codebases. In the Codebase Q&A track, you design tough exploration tasks around production TypeScript and JavaScript repositories, where answers demand runtime evidence instead of a scan of one file. The work centers on common projects such as Babel, Jest, Astro, TypeORM, Apollo Server, GraphQL-JS, Socket.IO, TanStack Router, NextAuth, XState, TypeDoc, and typescript-eslint. Engagement is contract and task-based, remote in Mercor Studio, and pays $130 for each approved task.
What You'll Do6
- 1Pick tasks from a pre-validated pool of TypeScript repositories, where every task comes with a git commit pin, an engineering question, positive and negative rubrics, foils, and a golden solution.
- 2Study the repository until you grasp the subsystem in question, including the relevant pull request and issue history.
- 3Rewrite each task's question so it challenges frontier coding agents while staying well-defined and fair to answer.
- 4Adjust rubrics and foils to reward sound reasoning and reject answers that look plausible but are wrong.
- 5Run the full validation loop in Studio (Check, Golden, Run, Analyze) and repeat until every stage passes.
- 6Document your work in the task README, submit it for expert review, and address reviewer feedback on any returned tasks.
Requirements6
- 13+ years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial production TypeScript.
- 2A demonstrated ability to navigate a large, unfamiliar TypeScript monorepo and explain how it behaves at runtime, beyond what the types declare.
- 3Fluency in the advanced type system, module resolution, bundlers, transpilers, and the Node and browser runtimes, plus comfort reading compiler and plugin internals.
- 4Experience with developer tooling, compilers, test frameworks, GraphQL servers, or state machines, since the task mix leans toward architecture and system design (48%) and code onboarding (35%).
- 5Precise written English, because the questions and rubrics you produce are the product.
- 6Comfort with git at commit level, containerized environments, and command-line tooling.
Who Should Apply
The ideal candidate brings 3+ years of production TypeScript work and has spent real time inside a large monorepo, tracing runtime behavior across packages rather than stopping at type signatures. Careful writing matters here, because your questions and rubrics become the training product, and experience with developer tooling, compilers, GraphQL servers, or state machines adds weight. The role does not fit engineers whose TypeScript work is limited to small apps or who rely on type definitions alone without investigating runtime evidence. Candidates often score low when their task questions are too easy for frontier agents, or when their rubrics fail to separate correct reasoning from plausible but wrong answers. Reviewers also reject tasks when written English is weak or documentation is vague.
Salary Insight
The source lists $130 for each approved task. Since the engagement is task-based, total pay depends on how many tasks pass review, not on hours you log. Mercor routes every task through a second engineer and a super reviewer, so approval is the gate for payment.

Application Tip
Name the large TypeScript repositories you have navigated in your resume, then describe one runtime bug or architectural question you traced across packages. Add a short writing sample of a codebase question that requires runtime evidence, along with the rubric you would use. That combination signals the two things reviewers weigh most: monorepo investigation and precise written reasoning.

VerifiedC Software Engineer - Codebase Q&A (Remote)
Mercor needs experienced C engineers to shape a reinforcement-learning dataset that helps AI agents reason about unfamiliar repositories. Your work centers on Codebase Q&A, an environment where agents explore real software and answer high-level engineering questions that demand runtime evidence, not a quick scan of one file. The task pool pulls from production systems such as PostgreSQL, Redis, OpenSSH, and git, with each repo pinned to a specific commit. You rewrite questions, adjust scoring rubrics, and validate tasks in Mercor Studio. The contract pays $130 per approved task and runs remote.

Mercor
VerifiedGo Software Engineer (Remote) - Codebase Q&A
Mercor needs seasoned Go engineers to shape training data for AI agents that learn to inspect unfamiliar codebases. In this Codebase Q&A track, you create and refine tasks that ask deep engineering questions about production Go projects such as etcd, Traefik, Helm, and Temporal. Each task demands runtime evidence, so a surface search or single file read will not resolve it. The repository pool spans infrastructure-grade systems, including CoreDNS, NATS Server, Syncthing, restic, Authelia, BadgerDB, quic-go, gRPC-Go, Hugo, rclone, Trivy, cert-manager, and Pion WebRTC. Mercor pays per approved task, and you work in Mercor Studio from any location.

Mercor
VerifiedPython Software Engineer - Codebase Q&A Remote
Mercor needs experienced Python engineers to build training data that helps AI agents reason through unfamiliar codebases. The Codebase Q&A track is a reinforcement-learning setting where agents learn to inspect and explain production Python code. You will design hard engineering questions around projects such as Django, Twisted, Scrapy, SymPy, mypy, pip, coverage.py, mitmproxy, Certbot, Tornado, Werkzeug, sqlfluff, and Meson. Each task pushes past single-file reading and demands runtime evidence. Work happens in Mercor Studio, remote and async, with pay per approved task.
