Overview

Mercor needs seasoned Go engineers to shape training data for AI agents that learn to inspect unfamiliar codebases. In this Codebase Q&A track, you create and refine tasks that ask deep engineering questions about production Go projects such as etcd, Traefik, Helm, and Temporal. Each task demands runtime evidence, so a surface search or single file read will not resolve it. The repository pool spans infrastructure-grade systems, including CoreDNS, NATS Server, Syncthing, restic, Authelia, BadgerDB, quic-go, gRPC-Go, Hugo, rclone, Trivy, cert-manager, and Pion WebRTC. Mercor pays per approved task, and you work in Mercor Studio from any location.

What You'll Do6

  • 1Pick a task from a vetted pool of Go repositories, each pinned to a git commit and paired with an engineering question, positive and negative rubrics, foils, and a golden answer.
  • 2Investigate the repository until you grasp the subsystem, along with the relevant PR or issue history.
  • 3Rework the task question so it challenges frontier coding agents while staying well-defined and fair to answer.
  • 4Update rubrics and foils to reward sound reasoning and reject answers that look right but are wrong.
  • 5Move through the Studio validation cycle: Check, Golden, Run, Analyze. Repeat until every stage passes.
  • 6Document your work in the task README, submit it for expert review, and address reviewer feedback on returned tasks.

Requirements6

  • 13+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant production Go work.
  • 2Proven ability to navigate a large, unfamiliar Go codebase and explain runtime behavior, not just source-level facts.
  • 3Fluency in Go concurrency, interfaces, module boundaries, and the standard library. Comfort reading generated code and build tooling.
  • 4Background in distributed systems, networking, storage engines, or Kubernetes tooling. The task mix leans toward architecture and system design (42%), code onboarding (26%), and root-cause analysis (20%).
  • 5Precise written English, because your questions and rubrics become the product.
  • 6Familiarity with git at commit level, containerized environments, and command-line tooling.

Who Should Apply

The ideal candidate brings at least three years of professional engineering work and has spent real time in production Go systems. You can open an unfamiliar repo such as Traefik or etcd, trace a subsystem, and explain how it behaves when running. This role fits engineers who enjoy writing precise questions and rubrics, then iterating through validation until the task holds up. Candidates who skim source files, lack runtime debugging instincts, or write vague English will struggle. A common rejection reason is submitting tasks whose questions a strong coding agent can answer without runtime evidence, and another is weak rubric design that lets plausible but incorrect answers pass.

Salary Insight

Each approved task pays $130. The post lists no fixed monthly salary. For task-based AI training work, that rate reflects the senior Go skill and review process involved. A second engineer and a super reviewer check each task before acceptance, so payment depends on how many tasks clear review.

Application Tip

In your application, name a large Go repository you have worked in and describe one runtime behavior you diagnosed through logs, pprof, traces, or a debugger. Tie that story to Go concurrency, module boundaries, or Kubernetes tooling, because reviewers screen for hands-on system reasoning. Skip generic summaries of your resume.

C Software Engineer - Codebase Q&A (Remote)

Mercor needs experienced C engineers to shape a reinforcement-learning dataset that helps AI agents reason about unfamiliar repositories. Your work centers on Codebase Q&A, an environment where agents explore real software and answer high-level engineering questions that demand runtime evidence, not a quick scan of one file. The task pool pulls from production systems such as PostgreSQL, Redis, OpenSSH, and git, with each repo pinned to a specific commit. You rewrite questions, adjust scoring rubrics, and validate tasks in Mercor Studio. The contract pays $130 per approved task and runs remote.
