Overview

Mercor runs this project alongside a leading AI research lab, and the work centers on how well a large language model handles Portuguese. You will judge model output across translation, summarization, dialogue, and grammar correction, then rewrite or annotate text so it meets native-level linguistic and cultural standards. Every error you flag and every edit you make feeds back into training for LLM performance in Portuguese. Expect close work with AI researchers who rely on your read of regional variation, register, and nuance.

What You'll Do7

  • Review Portuguese text produced by a large language model and rate its accuracy, fluency, and cultural fit across tasks such as translation, summarization, dialogue, and grammar correction.
  • Edit, refine, or fully rewrite Portuguese content so it reads as natural, correct, and appropriate for the target audience.
  • Tag Portuguese passages for grammatical, syntactic, and semantic features that support model training.
  • Document model failures and language gaps with clear examples, then discuss findings with AI researchers working on the model.
  • Deliver written linguistic analysis that explains why a given output falls short and what a correct version looks like.
  • Compare regional variants of Portuguese and flag cases where usage changes meaning or tone.
  • Keep annotation consistent with project guidelines while noting places where those guidelines need refinement.

Requirements6

  • Native or near-native Portuguese, backed by firm control of grammar, syntax, and style.
  • Hands-on background in translation, editing, linguistic annotation, or NLP data work carried out in Portuguese.
  • Sharp eye for regional variation, register, and context-driven word choice.
  • Record of spotting subtle errors and unnatural phrasing that a casual reader would miss.
  • Comfort working with distributed teams and explaining linguistic judgments in clear written form.
  • Interest in AI and language technology helps, though the project does not require prior model work.

Who Should Apply

Portuguese translators, editors, and linguistic annotators who already work with NLP data and want their judgment to shape model behavior. If you can defend an edit with a grammatical or cultural reason and write that reasoning up for researchers, this project fits you.

Salary Insight

The rate is $50.00 per hour. That sits above the $20 to $35 per hour band common for freelance Portuguese translation and annotation work, which tracks with the research-grade evaluation and analysis this project expects.
