Overview

Outlier brings on United States-based personal finance and tax practitioners to train AI systems on real household money questions. The scenarios cover tax preparation, retirement planning, equity compensation, and estate work, not corporate finance. You supply the judgment of someone who advises actual clients, while the project supplies the tasks and written instructions. Engagements run remote and freelance, paid at $50 per hour.

What You'll Do7

  • Review AI draft answers to personal finance and tax questions, then flag errors in areas such as capital gains, retirement account rules, or RSU treatment.
  • Rewrite explanations of financial concepts so a reader with no finance background can follow the reasoning.
  • Work through scenarios covering budgeting, debt payoff, mortgage refinancing, or 529 and college planning, and judge which answer holds up.
  • Check model output against current tax rules and standard planning practice for individual filers.
  • Follow the written instructions and style guidance attached to each batch of tasks.
  • Document your reasoning so reviewers can trace how you reached a verdict.
  • Raise a flag when a prompt falls outside what a competent advisor could answer from the information given.

Requirements6

  • Reside in the United States for the length of the engagement.
  • At least 2 years of professional experience tied to personal finance, tax, or household advising.
  • Hands-on work helping individuals or households in at least one area from the posting, such as individual tax returns, investment advice, comprehensive financial planning, trust administration, or equity compensation.
  • Ability to explain financial concepts in plain language to a general audience.
  • Sound judgment when a scenario allows more than one defensible answer.
  • Comfort working from detailed written instructions and applying them the same way across tasks.

Preferred Qualifications5

  • CFP credential
  • PFS credential
  • CPA license
  • Enrolled Agent (EA) status
  • CTFA credential

Who Should Apply

A CPA, Enrolled Agent, financial planner, or trust officer with two or more years of client-facing work fits this project. The role suits practitioners who handle household finances themselves, from tax returns and capital gains to retirement accounts and RSUs, and who can defend an answer in writing.

Salary Insight

$50 USD per hour, stated in the posting. That rate sits in the usual band for finance and tax subject-matter experts on AI training projects, and since the engagement is freelance you cover your own taxes and benefits, so weigh that against the hourly figure.
