Oncologist
Listing checked October 8, 2026 · pay as published by Mercor
Overview
Mercor partners with a leading AI research lab to sharpen how frontier models handle real medical cases in oncology. The project centers on clinical trial design, patient eligibility, and treatment choices, with the aim of finding where AI reasoning breaks down. Practicing US oncologists with clinical trials experience build realistic tasks and review model output for clinical accuracy. The engagement runs remote and short term, pays per hour, and may extend based on performance.
What You'll Do5
- 1Create realistic oncology tasks and scenarios, with a focus on clinical trials, that reveal gaps in frontier AI model responses
- 2Review AI clinical reasoning for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with current standard-of-care guidelines
- 3Find flawed logic, missed diagnoses, incomplete treatment rationale, or unsafe recommendations in model outputs
- 4Provide expert responses and chain-of-thought reasoning that reflect real clinical decision-making
- 5Maintain clinical rigor and accuracy in every contribution
Requirements9
- 1MD or DO with a completed fellowship in medical oncology or hematology/oncology
- 2Active, unrestricted US medical license
- 3Current US practice with direct care of oncology patients
- 4Three or more years of post-fellowship experience in your current role (preferred)
- 5Direct involvement in oncology clinical trials as a PI, sub-investigator, or treating physician
- 6Working knowledge of trial protocols, eligibility criteria, and regulatory frameworks such as FDA rules and RECIST
- 7Skill in presenting clinical reasoning in written form with precision and clarity
- 8Keen attention to detail when judging the safety and accuracy of AI-generated medical content
- 9Not a fit: radiation oncology, surgical oncology, or oncology work outside clinical practice
Who Should Apply
A practicing US medical oncologist or hematologist/oncologist with a completed fellowship fits this project best. The work suits someone who has served as a PI, sub-investigator, or treating physician on oncology clinical trials and can write out clinical reasoning with precision. Candidates who work in radiation oncology, surgical oncology, or roles without direct patient care fall outside the scope. Common rejections happen when an applicant holds a license but does not see oncology patients in current practice, or when they list trial exposure without hands-on protocol or eligibility work. A missing US license or fellowship in medical oncology or hematology/oncology also blocks fit.
Salary Insight
The source lists $380.00 per hour. That rate sits at the high end for expert medical review work and reflects the demand for an active US oncologist who has direct clinical trial experience.

Application Tip
Lead with your credentials: active unrestricted US license, completed medical oncology or hematology/oncology fellowship, and current patient care. Name your exact clinical trial role (PI, sub-investigator, or treating physician) and cite protocols, eligibility criteria, FDA rules, and RECIST. A short writing sample that shows step-by-step clinical reasoning for a trial eligibility question will set your application apart.

Mercor
VerifiedMedical Expert (M.D./D.O.) - Remote Part-Time
Mercor keeps this listing open for physicians who want to shape how frontier AI models handle clinical reasoning. The work fits around your practice: you might write a clinical vignette from a real case, complete with presentation, labs, and imaging, then supply the attending-level answer used as a reference. Other projects ask you to grade model output on diagnostic reasoning, checking whether a differential follows a sensible order, whether the model anchors on a first impression, and whether the proposed workup matches guidelines. You also flag recommendations that read well in a textbook but fail the patient in front of you because of comorbidities, contraindications, or access limits. Projects start on short notice, so Mercor draws from this pool when client demand matches your specialty.

Mercor
VerifiedClinical Medicine Domain Expert
A leading AI lab's GenAI team needs a practicing clinician to shape how frontier models reason about real clinical work. You will audit medical knowledge tasks for clinical soundness, write the instruction specs and golden solutions that set the standard for correctness, and design benchmarks that track model improvement. This full-time W-2 role runs through Cincinnatus LLC, with placement inside the client's own tools and workflows. Expect a hybrid schedule in the Bay Area, with on-site days each week, so local residency or a self-funded relocation is required.

Mercor
VerifiedGeneral Physician
Mercor pairs experienced physicians with a leading AI lab to check how well health AI models handle diagnosis, clinical reasoning, and care workflows. You will review model outputs, score how each answer aligns with accepted medical practice, and write feedback that helps researchers see where a model fails. The work is part-time at 20 or more hours each week and runs for six weeks, with an immediate start. Candidates need an MD or DO, an active unrestricted US license, completed residency, and a current patient-facing practice.

AfterQuery
VerifiedMedical Expert - AI Clinical Reasoning Contract
AfterQuery brings physicians, nurses, PAs and other clinicians into a remote contract role on its Medicine team. You will write tough clinical prompts and score AI answers for accuracy and sound medical reasoning. The work touches clinical diagnosis, treatment planning, pharmacology and patient safety. Plan for 40 hours each week at $50 to $200 per hour, with an assessment before anyone reviews your application.

Mercor
VerifiedPhysician Talent Network
Mercor is building a network of physicians who want to shape the future of AI in medicine. As a member, you'll work on contract projects for leading AI labs, helping train and evaluate models using your clinical expertise. This is an ongoing talent pool — you apply once, and when a relevant project arises (typically 15-30 hours per week), you'll be considered. Fully remote and $110–$250/hour.

Mercor
VerifiedMedical Expert - Remote AI Evaluation & Review
Mercor recruits health professionals who can supply the medical judgment that top AI research teams cannot generate on their own. The medicine pool is an open call, not a single opening, so it remains live while projects start on short notice. When a project launches, you may write a case from your practice with the presentation, workup, constraints, and reference answer that sets the standard for grading a model's attempt. You may also review model output for clinical reasoning, checking whether the differential follows a sensible order, whether a guideline applies to the patient, and whether the care plan is safe to carry out. Mercor sets rates per project, and most work is remote and part-time.
