Overview
This contract role centers on building tough technical problems in manufacturing and industrial engineering, where the right answer depends on reading constraints correctly. You will design scenarios in process design, production systems, quality engineering, automation, and supply chain modeling, then supply the correct solution and define what makes an answer valid. The work is fully remote and flexible, so it fits alongside a current position. Pay ranges from $85 to $185 per hour, and you will join a team that values engineering judgment under constraints.
What You'll Do8
- Create challenging technical problems from your own specialty, such as process design, production systems, quality engineering, automation, or supply chain and operations modeling, with realistic constraints and supporting data.
- Provide the correct solution and explain the reasoning that leads to it.
- Set objective criteria for correctness so another expert reviewer would reach the same conclusion.
- Review problems built by other contributors for technical accuracy and soundness of method.
- Identify problems that are ambiguous or cannot be graded and flag them instead of submitting them.
- Ensure each problem reflects real-world engineering judgment under constraints.
- Document assumptions and data sources that support each problem.
- Collaborate with the team to refine problem quality based on feedback.
Requirements7
- Master’s or PhD in manufacturing, industrial, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field.
- Principal, staff, or fellow-level experience at a major manufacturing organization, or a faculty appointment at a leading university.
- Deep technical depth in at least one subdomain, with hands-on ownership of the work.
- Ability to explain why an answer is correct clearly enough that another engineer could verify it.
- Strong engineering judgment under constraints and the ability to recognize when an answer is wrong.
- Experience with process design, production systems, or related areas.
- Comfort working independently and delivering high-quality technical content.
Preferred Qualifications2
- Publications, patents, or a record of technical leadership.
- AI or LLM evaluation experience.
Who Should Apply
This role suits engineers with a Master’s or PhD and principal-level industry experience or a faculty appointment, who have deep expertise in a manufacturing or industrial engineering subdomain. Candidates should be able to craft realistic problems, provide correct solutions, and define clear correctness criteria. If you enjoy explaining complex engineering concepts and reviewing technical work, this could be a good fit.
